Cancel your gym membership!

The day I found this book (and the Darebee website), I cancelled my membership to the gym. I never knew working out could be this fun or easy. I mean you have to work hard, but it's not complicated. If I have 10 minutes, that's what I do, and I get a great workout. The site (Darebee is excellent too!) Thank you to other reviewers for mentioning that since I found it on here.

Love the book!!

This book is for someone like myself who just don't go the video route. I like having the book and illustrations while I work out. This book is great.
You can take it anywhere and it's always there to remind you....I leave mine on the coffee table. Easy if you want or tough if you want. I've worked out much more since I bought this book.

A Wonderful, Contrarian Study of Urban Issues

Edward C. Banfield's most important work, Unheavenly City (and its revised edition, Unheavenly City Revisited) was and remains a dramatic challenge to the traditional concepts of urban renewal originating in the New Deal. The book was intensely controversial when it was published, and it's not hard to see why from reading it, as Banfield challenges almost every tenet of the existing urban studies orthodoxy. From the impact of minimum wage laws to the importance of social class, the author touches every important issue that faces the underclass in cities, with often surprising recommendations.
Conservatives will appreciate what is probably the best statement of a conservative plan and thinking about the plight of cities, but Banfield's meticulous use of careful arguments and research make the book useful for those who disagree with him as well. An excellent book for anyone who wants to examine the problems of cities and challenge their own assumptions, with bold recommendations for helping those trapped in poverty.

This book is one of the most read, and debate documents in America today.

During President Nixons short term in office, he commissioned a Congressional Study to answer the question, "Why can't one of the richest nations in the world (at that time it was America) eliminate proverty. The results of the study were so controversial that the Study was never released to the Public, but copies are still available in the Congressional Library today. The main problem of the study is that many people who read it concluded that the reason that America could not eliminate poverty was due to "racial prejudince and practices. Nothing could be further from the truth. Edward Banfield took it upon himself to do his own study in order to answer the same question. You will notice that the title of the book has the key work in it, "Revisited". He had already written the "Unheavenly City" and it was so poorly misinterpreted that he came back and wrote the "Unheavenly City Revisited" to try to explain that the reason that America could not elimiate poverty, was not in fact due to "racial overtones", but in fact was due to "the future orientations of generations of people that created four differnent Classes of people: !) the Upper Class; 2) the Middle Class; 3) the Working Class; and 4) the Lower Class. What caused people to end up in which class had nothing to do with racial matters, it had every thing to do with the "future orientations" of the people with each class. The Upper Class held visions and dreams beyond their own life times, and because of this remarkable future orientation they built their wealth and success so that they could have an impact on the world they lived in, and could leave a legacy and inheritance behind. The Middle Class had a long term future orientation that allowed them to dream and have a vision of continuing to improve both their social and financial status during their lifetimes. The Working Class did not have long term future orienations, but mostly focused on living for one season to the next in the agricultural farming and ranching business, or from pay check to pay check as employees. Due to their lack of long term furture dreams and no vision beyond one season to another or from pay check to pay check, they were the victim of circomstances and became trapped in that class. The Poor Class did not have any future orientation, they continued to breed generation after generations of people that lived from one moment to the next, continuing to become enslaved in the poverty trap. This book is a well documented piece of research. It is a most read for anyone that truly wants to understand why poverty cannot be eliminated in America, and why racial factors have very little to do with poverty. It is a must read to any one who actually believers that "racial matters" are the cause of poverty in America. The very myth that racial matters have everything to do with poverty actually helps perpetuates "racial biases" in America. Be prepared to have an eye opening experience.

Live in a US city? then welcome to Hell

Hell? Yes, that is the general impression of urban America that you are left with after reading 'The Unheavenly City Revisited'. There are a couple of reasons for this. The original book 'The Unheavenly City' was first published in 1970 and then 'Revisited' in 1974. In many ways urban America is quite different today than it was then. It is no coincidence that an entire chapter is devoted to riots. Watts in 1965 and Detroit in 1967 were still very much a topic of discussion by urban planners. The main reason though for the impression of an urban hell is because that's exactly what the author believed we were creating. The main purpose of this book was to challenge and refute traditional approaches to urban planning. One of Banfields main contentions was that "we do not know and can never know what the real nature of the problem is, let alone what might work to alleviate or solve it". He wanted to make urban planning more multidisciplinary, bring in new approaches and ideas and broaden the debate.
He broadened the debate all right. There was such a storm of controversy that surrounded 'The Unheavenly City' that the author had to take the unusual step of publishing the 'Revisited' version only four years later largely to provide clarity and explain some of the more contentious points that he raised. For instance, the chapter entitled 'The Imperatives of Class' generated a lot of heat. Banfield was accused of saying that the lower class was synonymous with African Americans and the poor. He didn't say that. It didn't matter though because by bringing it up and dancing around it for an entire chapter he left himself open to critics who said 'Well it's what you meant even if you didn't say it.
Not all the criticism was related to his arguments and certainly not all of it was fair. It is clear that a lot of the criticism has to do with the fact that the book was written by someone who was not an urban planner. Banfield is a social scientist and his book reads like a philosophy of city life or urban psychology. The professionals did not like this approach, moreso because Banfield was critical of their motives "the reformer wants to improve the situation of the poor, the black, the slum dweller, and so on, not so much to make them better off materially as to to make himself and the whole society better off morally".
The book is recommended because of it's historical significance and because it gives an interesting perspective on the debate about urban policy thirty years ago. Be prepared to reread some sections though because the author does ramble and remember it was a text book so the writing style is dry.

About the Author

Ryan Walter is an assistant coach with the Vancouver Canucks of the National Hockey League. He played more than 1,000 games over 15 seasons with the Washington Capitals, Montreal Canadiens, and Vancouver Canucks. He served as vice president of the National Hockey League Players Association, was honored as the NHL Man of the Year in 1992, and played in the NHL all-star game in 1993. Walter has also served as captain of team Canada in the World Junior tournament and played for team Canada in four World Championships. He has worked as a consultant for several NHL teams and a television analyst for NHL broadcasts. Walter lives in British Columbia, Canada.

Mike Johnston is the head coach of the Portland Winter Hawks of the Western Hockey League. Johnston guided Canada to two World Junior Championships as an assistant coach and won three Spengler Cup gold medals as coach of the Canada Selects. He served in various capacities, including head coach and general manager, with Canada's gold medal–winning national team from 1994 to 1999. In five of the six seasons he coached the Vancouver Canucks, they finished with over 90 points, and on two occasions they surpassed the 100-point mark. In 2004, the Canucks won the Northwest Division Championship. In May 2007, Johnston again was selected to coach in the World Championships, and for the first time in 73 years Canada went undefeated (9-0) in winning gold. Johnston lives in Portland, Oregon.

Awesome, but kindle edition has issues - go for the paper.

This book is so awesome. I wish I had this book when I played in high school. My coaches were really good and taught us most of this, but it wasn't quite in order like this. I bought the Kindle edition, which had flaws in that the diagram description for the previous figure show with the diagram after it due to formatting issues. I still liked it, but it took work to remember what goes with what. I bought the paper version now too so I can see the diagrams with the description at the same time.

Great intro for novice players.

I picked this book up as someone who is just getting into adult recreational league hockey. Having been a fan of the NHL for the past 20 years, most of the terminology was familiar to me, but the book should be quite approachable for anyone. Even if you have no plans in coaching, I think you can benefit from the concepts and ideas which will provide you with a general overview of how hockey players are distributed and their offensive/defensive roles. In my experience, drop-in and novice league play aren't the most organized, but you can make your game more efficient by knowing general strategies in different situations.

Great book

I've been having my Pee Wee hockey playing son read a chapter every week before his game and saw an immediate improvement after one chapter. He's a defenseman and his current coach doesn't spend enough time teaching tactics and strategy. He now teaching his teammates the techniques he's picked up from the book. The book has a nice combination of text and diagrams, so even if their comprehension or attention span is limited, the pictures reinforce and simplify the verbiage.

Good,but could have been better.

Positives:
Has lots of pictures of many games.
Informative articles.
Very in-depth information covering arcade games from 1972-86

Negatives:
A lot of the pictures are grainy or of poor quality.
Seems like the author quit playing games after 1986,as not many games are covered and the info on most of them is pretty shallow.

Overall,it is still a cool book...it just could have been an incredible book had the author not "mailed it in" when covering all games after 1986.

There is nothing here that you cannot get in better quality from google images or from a good MAME (Multi Arcade Machine Emulator) frontend.

Further Adventures of Miss Virginia Bell and her family

At the beginning of this sequel to Family Shoes, the Bishop has asked Rev. Alex Bell to move to a new parish, a depressed housing project outside London. The residents there seem entirely lacking in community and church spirit, and indifferent to their new vicar. Because the Bishop has urged each of the Bell children to find a way to make the new assignment a success, each uses her or his initiative to make connections between the vicarage and the community. By the end, they've learned an important lesson: people become invested in each other by *doing things together* to improve their community, rather than by having those improvements done for them.
Streatfeild's books are among my favorites to re-read, but they are markedly formulaic: each has three or four kids, one of whom is pretty, and one who is plain or fat. One or two will be talented and driven, one gifted but unmotivated, and one lazy and often resentful of her position within the family. Almost all of the children in her books end up being essentially responsible, family-oriented, enterprising, and good problem-solvers when they learn to work together, using their different skills. What saves these books is Streatfeild's ability to capture the little resentments and solidarities of family life. As well, even the less likeable characters tend to become more sympathetic, because they grow in realistic ways. Ginnie Bell, Jane Winter, and Nicky Heath all mature through their escapades, but they do not really repent or fundamentally change - they certainly continue to infuriate their siblings!
Streatfeild's refusal to thoroughly reform her characters keeps the books from being saccharine-sweet and makes possible some truly touching moments. In New Shoes, this moment comes when we see Ginnie's realization that her smug, horribly spoiled cousin Veronica is desperately lonely. Although Ginnie certainly uses Veronica's desire for attention to get what she, herself, wants, by the end of the book she has ensured that her cousin's parents see their daughter in a different light.

delicious sequel to "Family Shoes"; warmth, humor, delight

"New Shoes" is a delectable sequel to "Family Shoes." The book can stand on its own, but it will make you eager to read the first adventures of the Bell family. Reverend Alexander Bell accepts a call to a church in a new town outside London, where the bishop thinks the new town needs not only Alex but Cathy and the childrem, Paul, Jane, Ginnie, and Angus, to help make the new town proud of itself. The blossoming of the children's talents, Ginnie's adventures with Admiral Oakley, what it takes for Mrs. Gage to stay with the family, the surprise reappearance of Miss Bloggs, Aunt Rose, Uncle Alfred, and Veronica (we all have relatives!), Ginnie's plotting to remain at St. winifred's, and the transforming effect of the Bell family on the new town,create a book you'll read over and over. Don't miss Ginnie's debut in the national press!

Another magical SHOES book

Do you remember when the Meg Ryan character walked into Tom Hanks' FOX BOOKS store and the customer asked about the "Shoes" books, and a monologue about the wonders of Noel Streatfeild's "Shoes" books ensued, touching on Dancing Shoes, Ballet Shoes, and Skating Shoes, which is absolutely wonderful? That scene made me break down crying, because I had never heard anyone other than myself talk about these terrific books, and the fact that it is tragic that they are mostly out of print and hard to find. This book is a wonderful story of working hard for a goal, and accomplishing it, or at least getting on the road to achieving a reasonable, yet magical, goal. This one is less "artistic" and more "home" focused than the other SHOES books. If you want a great book for your favorite elementary school girl, buy this one - then buy the other "Shoes" books (and get a copy of Tennis Shoes for your favorite boy too!)
