Great Read

This book exposes the truth about leaving it all behind to live in Mexico. While the beach truly is paradise, those of us who have tried it have paid a great price - our sanity. Jeff so accurately describes some of the comical and sad situations that we, as Americans find so frustrating that going back to the US rat race is a pleasure! A must read for anyone contemplating a leap from the US to Mexico.

Thought I'd get this for a friend- glad I read it first.

I have been to Mexico (and this area) several times and was looking for something lighthearted regarding cultural differences, etc. to give to a friend who was travelling there for the first time. Because the truth is, cultural differences and misunderstandings between Mexicans and Americans can be hilarious. Unfortunately this book wasn't.
Much of the book focused on a rather painful construction project. My husband and I have built two houses in the US in the last 7 years and many of the "Mexican" contractor disasters happened to us, right here in the USA (using American workers, too). Contractor assuring us that house would be finished (it wasn't) while sending workers to other jobs- yep that happened to me. Contractor disappearing with my deposit and never doing the work- yep that happened too. Workers stealing tools? Check. Shoddy work and even worse repairs? Check. Is that kind of thing more prevalent in Mexico? I have no idea. The book didn't seem objective- though I don't guess it was intended to be. It seemed that all the Americans living in Mexico in this book were unhappy about it, which seemed odd. If they disliked it so much why didn't they move back? Glad I read this before giving it to a friend- what a downer! I don't recommend it.

Really enjoyed the first hand, true story of this couple who followed their dreams.
I truly felt like I was there in the midst of their joys and miseries!
