About the Author

Colleen Murphy is an Associate Professor of Law and Philosophy and Director of the Women and Gender in Global Perspectives Program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  Her research focuses on engineering ethics, the ethics of risk and on transitional justice in post-conflict societies.  She is the author of A Moral Theory of Political Reconciliation (Cambridge University Press).  Professor Murphy was a Laurance S. Rockefeller Visiting Faculty Fellow at the Princeton University Center for Human Values. Her research has received financial support from the National Science Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Qatar National Research Fund.

Paolo Gardoni is a Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  His research focuses on the development and use of probabilistic methods to model the impact of natural and human-made hazards on interdependent structural and infrastructural systems.  He has been working on several multidisciplinary projects encompassing different areas including engineering, public policy, and ethics.  Professor Gardoni is the director of the Mid-America Earthquake (MAE) Center, established in 1997 by the National Science Foundation as one of three national earthquake engineering research centers.  He is also the associate director of the Community Resilience Center of Excellence funded by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

Hassan Bashir is Associate Professor of Political Science at Texas A&M University at Qatar. His areas of research interest include Political Theory, Non-Western political thought and moral dimensions of globalization. His recent work focuses on inter-cultural political theory, history of political thought, Asian Politics and non-state actors in international relations. Dr. Bashir is the author of Europe and the Eastern Other: Comparative Perspectives on Politics, Religion and Culture before the Enlightenment (Lexington Books - 2013). He is also the editor of Co-existing in a Globalized World: Key Themes in Inter-professional Ethics (Lexington Books -2013) and Global Citizenship and Multiculturalism: Political, Cultural and Ethical Perspectives (Forthcoming 2015). Dr. Bashir is the Founding Director of The initiative in Professional Ethics at Texas A&M University - Qatar.

Charles E. (Ed) Harris, Jr. is a former Professor of Philosophy and former holder of the Sue and Harry Bovay Professorship in the History and Ethics of Professional Engineering at Texas A&M University. His specialty is applied and professional ethics. He and his co-authors have published a textbook in engineering ethics. He has also published a textbook in applied ethics and numerous articles in professional and applied ethics.

Eyad Masad is a Professor in the Zachry Department of Civil Engineering at Texas A&M University and the Mechanical Engineering Program at Texas A&M University at Qatar. He is a licensed professional engineer in the State of Texas. He teaches courses in engineering and ethics and has organized several workshops on professional ethics. He is also the Co-Founding Director of The initiative in Professional Ethics at Texas A&M University at Qatar.

A fantastic introduction to history's most heroic villains

I encountered Henry Bradley's book The Story of the Goths a short time ago, and was delighted to find a readable, enjoyable account of a people that left such an indelible impression on our history. The Goths are well-remembered for the infamous sack of Rome in 410 A.D. Their name is still associated (though through roundabout channels) with darkness and fear. But the truth of their story is not at all what the film clips of filthy, roaring barbarians would have you believe. The Goths actually saved the West, not just once but several times. Their legacy is still very much with us, forming a cultural element deep within peoples ranging from eastern Europe to South and Central America.
In doing research for my own book (a novel) I spent several years reading everything about the Goths that I could find - both primary and secondary sources, trying to put together a fuller picture of these mysterious people. I learned a great deal, but I must say that nowhere did I find all the information arranged in such a way as it is here in Bradley's book. The account that emerges is vivid and yet concise enough to be clear and easy to read.
One thing that has struck me as slightly odd about the book is that some of the language belies bias (i.e. words like "heathen" and savage") that would not be unusual at all in Gibbon, Burry, or any of the classic historians of the era, but seem "old fasioned" by contemporary standards. At first I thought the book was a good deal older than the 2013 copyright. Regardless, these are subtle and for most should not detract from the enjoyment or the bountiful education that the book provides.
I highly recomend this book to anyone interested in the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the Dark Ages, or in understanding the European story.

Who were the Goths ?

I have read many histories where the "Goths, Ostrogoths, and Visigoths" were mentioned, but I never understood who these people were, where they came from, and where they fit into the story of European culture. Thanks to the scholarship of Henry Bradley, I now have a working understanding of the Goths, but many questions remain for me to research. No references are given, and it desperately needs more illustrations - especially maps showing where these people were and when!

Really interesting part of history of which I had a very vague understanding (mostly from Gibbons). This book is a fun read and fills in the details on a people now mostly forgotten. What I love most about reading these types of history books is the little gems that pop out and fill in the why's on so many things that still shape our world today. If you are looking for an example of how leadership matters read the chapters about Belisarius and Theodoric. Another gem; the source of the Spanish laws against the Jews are discussed, an historic tragedy that recently resurfaced in Spanish politics.

This audio will appeal mostly to business managers and work group leaders who are familiar with big league baseball. That is not to say that nonfans will be disappointed in hearing the management philosophy of arguably the most successful current manager in professional baseball; it's just that fans will find the narrative greatly enriched by Torre's practical examples of his successes and failures with the sport's elite. This very nicely produced tape is a pleasant surprise because the author proves to be as excellent a reader as he is a manager. Yes, a lot of this can be categorized as managerial common sense, but it's Torre's application of his "12 keys to managing" and his baseball examples that will lead listeners to attempt to modify communications with problem team members, motivate their players, or change their approach to a "bad" boss. Fans will have the additional pleasure of learning Torre's managerial perspectives on the work habits, personalities, and motivations of some of the Yankees and knowing that his tough boss is George Steinbrenner. Joe Torre clinched his second World Series as the manager of the New York Yankees in 1998, making him the toast of New York and the baseball world. Torre Offers Real Inspiration!

This turns out to be one of the best business/motivation books in years. Torre trumpets values such as fairness, respect, trust, communication, serenity, optimism, and how to create a sense of family as a way to build teamwork. I think that every company and managers at all levels could learn a thing or two (or twelve) from Mr. Torre. Just look at what the Yankees have accomplished! Even if you don't like the Yankees you have to like this team because they are so professional, and they work together with civility, respect, and joy in what they do. Clearly, Torre created the atmosphere for this team to become one for the ages. The book tells how you can do this in simple, clear steps, and it is chock full of lively stories. If corporate managers and teams followed his advice, teams would achieve levels of success that would be, well, Yankee-like.

Book for Employee Communicators too!

Why Davis & Company (employee communication consulting experts) likes this book -- Even if you're not baseball fan-or a Yankees fan-it's easy to be impressed with Joe Torre's dedication to success and confidence as a leader, motivator and communicator.
In the introduction, Torre explains that although his experiences are in baseball, the principles and advice his gives in his book are applicable to any business or organization that has team leaders and team players. His advice is broken out into 12 short chapters-each one dedicated to a success strategy. We, at Davis & Company, love the fact that Chapter 3 focuses on communication. "Straight Communication: The Key to Trust" addresses how important clear communication is to having your team strive toward the same goals. Torre stresses that communication is everybody's responsibility-not just the leader's. Yes this is a simple concept, but it's illustrated nicely with anecdotes and stories about the players and situations where clear communication was key.
Pros -- Business book without being dry. An easy read. Success strategies are explained through real-life, easy-to-remember (and relate to) examples.
Cons -- Some might view this book as too baseball-focused, with sports analogies run amok.

We All Make Mistakes In Books Reviews

House of cards is a short captivating read. Ilana Waters can really bring Paris to life in it's pages, the good, the colors and the dark and mysterious catacombs that lie just beneath the surface.

Sherry is living on her own in Paris as a Tarot reader, when one day a group of people get her attention and she reads the fortune on one of them. Later, when she's going back to her flat she's kidnapped by them and taken to their lair as food to their Master.
With the help of Lucas, The Master agrees to keep her alive for as long as she can entertain them.

I really enjoyed Sherry's strengh. She is a tarot Reader and even when she's not sure of where she wants to go she knows what she doesn't want and stands up for herself, or sometimes she also knows when is better to keep quiet and obey the vampires.

Lucas is the sweetest guy she ever met. He brings her present daily and makes sure she has everything she needs. We see a part of him, of his past and how he came to be a vampire, however there could have been so much more to his character.

The relationship between Lucas and Sherry develops slow, because they both know what they can lose but you can see the insta-love right away.

One thing I think would have been better is if it was on a first person POV. As a reader you can only read about Sherry even though the book is told from a third person's POV. It would have been more richer if using the third person's POV, we'd had more insight to the rest of the characters inner workings.

The House of Cadamon is a beautiful mansion inside the catacombs where the vampires live. And it's occupants are all very interesting, with different backgrounds. I'd have love getting to know them more, why they did what they did and what they all wanted.

The Tarot element was a nice twist for this kind of story and I really liked that part.

House of Cards develops in a slow pace but has exciting or important element just in the right places.

Fun and Engaging!

This is a great paranormal romance for all vampire/monster lovers. 18-year-old Sherry is just getting settled in Paris and uses her gift to read Tarot cards as a means to earn a living. She's had a rocky past and still must fight to keep from going under in the beautiful city. But she's tough - mostly. The descriptions of the market place where she has her stand and the surrounding atmosphere were wonderful! I had no trouble placing myself right there next to her.

When the evil vampires appear - and yes, they are not the nice friendly types - the danger is tangible. When Sherry's swept into the underworld of Paris, her reactions and thoughts are very realistic. And the descriptions are so vivid, it felt like the air around me was even growing musty and old.

This story takes a slightly different twist on vampires, one that in many ways is more realistic than other myths and stories. The romance isn't instant but develops over time giving the reader a chance to get to know the characters and the situations they face. I especially enjoyed the fact that each vampire's personality was different; they couldn't be thrown into one category. I learned to hate or love the individual characters, and was kept on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next - and no, the turns were not always predictable.

Even weeks later, I catch myself thinking about some of the scenes. This was definitely an enjoyable read.

LOVED IT!!

This was a great paranormal romance. A Tarot reading girl with a rough past and bad memories of that past comes to find and fall in love with a wonderful boy, who has one fault...he is a vampire and his "family" wants nothing more than to use her Tarot reading abilities and then use her for supper. She isn't even sure that Lucas, the vampire boy, really feels anything in return for her. She really may not be more than a warm supper or snack, but somehow she thinks he is different, more "human" than the others in his views. Can she be right or is she just full of hopeful thinking? And even if there is more, how can she keep herself alive long enough with the other vampires to have any kind of relationship with Lucas?

I fell in love with the characters at once in this book. I especially liked Sherry (the Tarot reader) and Lucas (the vampire). The other characters were also very well developed and made to feel like they were real and may be under the reader's very own city. Who knows right? The plot was very exciting and fast paced. The story started off running and didn't stop until the last word of the story...and even then there is room and hopes for another continuation to follow. I love books that have an ending that is satisfying, but at the same time you could see another book in the making if the author so wished. Makes me, as a reader, excited to keep following the author to see what other works come around for the story, if any. This story was very well written from the characters right down to the plot and the writing itself. The background of the characters tugs at the heartstrings of the reader too, I know it did for me. Great paranormal romance read that is very much its own work and not "the same as....but with different character names". Sometimes paranormal romance books all sound the same to me, but this one was very different and very exciting to read. This is a must read for any paranormal "junkie"!

Much to like - but also a few things to make you go "Wait... what?" - in the eight-issue arc WOLVERINE: OLD MAN LOGAN. There's no doubt at all that Wolverine is one of the most overexposed characters out there, having been affiliated with a boatload of teams (Weapon X, Alpha Flight, Dept. H., the X-Men, X-Force, S.H.I.E.L.D., the Avengers, and soon probably the New Brighton Archeological Society, the Yancy Street Gang and the PTA). But, admittedly, there's something so very cool about the guy and that vicious thing that he's the best at doing. I don't know that OLD MAN LOGAN is the best Wolverine story ever told. I certainly don't believe that it's the most relevant. But it's certainly one of the most fun and wild and memorable.

Set roughly fifty years in the future, and to spoiler readers of Marvel comic books, the bad guys finally win the whole shebang. The story begins with "Nobody knows what happened on the night the heroes fell." and one of the things which bug me about this arc is that writer Mark Millar never does give us the score on just what went down with the cataclysmic fighty fight between the Marvel heroes and villains. We don't get the juicy details, even though we learn that, finally, finally, the bad guys got wise and realized that, together, they outnumber the good guys by a ratio of huge. Some of the most brilliant villain heavy hitters got together and coordinated simultaneous strikes on the Marvel heroes and pretty much eradicated them from the face of the planet. Fifty years ago.

Something truly horrific happened to Wolverine, and it scarred him so badly that he turned pacifist. Decades later, grizzled and white-haired, he's a struggling farmer trying to support his family, and nowadays he prefers to be called Logan. He's still tormented and so committed is he to not popping his claws that, when he can't make rent, he voluntarily takes a vicious beating from his landlords, who happen to be the rat-crazy, deformed grandchildren of Bruce Banner. Yeah, Logan's dirt poor farm lies in Hulkland (what used to be California). If you thought Mr. Furley was a horrible landlord...

Desperate for rent money, Logan reluctantly leaves his family and signs on for a sprawling cross-country trek with his old and now blind friend Hawkeye on a mysterious courier mission. So what we get for most of these issues is this hybrid of gritty buddy adventure and dystopian travelogue. Issue #66 presents us with a map of America as currently carved up among the supervillains. We note that the most significant demesnes fall to Hulkland, the Kingdom of The Kingpin, Doom's Lair, and The President's Quarter - and, right away, I started wondering who is this President. It turns out, whoever he is, he was the one who masterminded the heroes' downfall fifty years ago. It's also interesting that the villains only cared about ruling the good ol' U.S.A. and didn't give an eff about taking over the rest of the world.

WOLVERINE: OLD MAN LOGAN collects issues #66-72 of the ongoing WOLVERINE comic book, as well as the one-shot WOLVERINE: OLD MAN LOGAN GIANT-SIZE (but not really "giant-size" in terms of length of story). Mark Millar's post-apocalyptic vision is fueled by his usual outrageous, over-the-top brand of storytelling. But there's also this palpable sense of desolation, an elegiac tone, that surfaces as Logan and Hawkeye travel from wasteland to wasteland and witness the devastating fallout to what happened five decades ago. Decayed structures and bones of the fallen dot the landscape. Superheroes are become extinct. Even Spider-Man's granddaughter is wicked.

It's weird but this story arc is both a rapid read... and a slow read. It reads quick because Millar holds back on the dialogue and allows artist Steve McNiven to take over the narrative, and McNiven's art is really exceptional here, maybe the best I've seen of his stuff. It's cinematic and there are many, many iconic images of our growly Canuck. I'm guessing that his art is the reason for the horrendous scheduling delays, but after marveling at the finished product I tend to want to give him a pass. But, like with LEGION OF THREE WORLDS, OLD MAN LOGAN reads better as a collected trade. There's also the pace of the story, which at times is leisurely. Logan and Hawkeye end up meeting all sorts of baddies, but Logan is stubborn in his vow to stay non-violent, so the action initially isn't what we'd call blistering.

We don't expect Logan to stay a peace-loving gent, and so the anticipation builds to that inevitable time when he unleashes his inner snikt. Which he does in the last few issues - and when Wolverine loses it, he really, really loses it. Millar's slow burn approach then switches up to visceral scenes of slaughter, and oh that poor eviscerated cow. Lots of gratuitous and brutal maiming and blood-letting, but so much fun and, frankly, it's what we expect from a Wolverine story.

Two more things which bothered me. First, I wasn't too impressed when I learned the identity of the mysterious President, this guy not having much of a history with Wolverine and, so, ergo, not so much with the resonance. A more telling thing for me is that I can't quite buy into the big reveal of what happened to Wolverine 50 years ago, that tragic event which made him turn away from violence. Wolvie is the best at what he does, but I don't think even he's that good.

Despite all that, I think that OLD MAN LOGAN is slated for classic status, maybe right up there with Millar's "Enemy of the State" and Barry Windsor-Smith's "Weapon X" storylines. I'm reminded of the "Days of Future Past" X-Men story, not because OLD MAN LOGAN is as classic but because this is yet another possible future arc towards which the 616 Universe can veer. As of right now, OLD MAN LOGAN's is considered an alternate timeline. Still, if you're hankering for a peek at what becomes of this Logan, you should check out Millar's recent run on FANTASTIC FOUR, paying particular attention to the Nu-Earth/New Defenders/Death of the Invisible Woman arc (Fantastic Four: World's Greatest, Vol. 1), and also the Fantastic Force TPB (Fantastic Four) mini-series. Irregardless, I'm betting we haven't seen the last of OLD MAN LOGAN's world. And that's a good thing.

Unforgiven Meets Wanted

Mark Millar is a writer I very much enjoy, but he often seems to have trouble sticking endings. That has changed in this story as, from start to stop, it's massively well paced, enormously twisting, and ultimately satisfying. Bringing the sensibility of Clint Eastwood's magnum opus Unforgiven to the plot of the comic Wanted (which Millar also wrote), Wolverine treks across a land where almost every superhero has been killed and America divided amongst the remaining villains. Steve McNiven, teaming up with Millar again after Civil War, brings his A-game in every single panel, be it the ultra-violent battles or the gut-wrenching emotional moments, the Marvel universe has rarely looked so well drawn. I found myself reading it again the moment I finished it and catching all sorts of background references and hints, so it reads well the second, and I'm sure third, time. Absolute highest recommendation.

most interesting Wolverine Story in the last decade.

I'm going to admit I'm biased- I haven't liked the Wolverine books for a long time. All the writers clamoring to write his comic are so concerned with what new and different thing they're going to do with Wolverine or what soon to be retconned mysterious thing from his past they're going to introduce, that they wind up completely messing up the character and the story line. (I'm talking to you, Way.)

Mark Millar actually does these things but he does them well and without messing up the character. Millar is an old school story teller, he knows that good storytelling is character driven- meaning that a good story establishes a character's values and then challenges them to reveal something about that character. By increasing Wolverine's characteristic, latent guilt (which was a crucial aspect of what originally made him an interesting character) to a level which he psychologically neuters himself, we learn more about Wolverine through his nonviolence, rage, and indignation that we ever could about him by an absolute clarification of his past (once again, I'm talking to you Daniel Way.)

Also, there's lot's of gore. That's a plus too. ;)

Amazing teaching tool!

This is the second book of the series. It deals with the seven basic grammatical verb constructions in a way that even children understand and appreciate. Rabbi Marcuson has broken down the rules of grammar - as he broke down the rules of word construction in book one - to their basics and has presented the topic in such a way as to keep students interested.
