A very nice quality book with excellent page feel. It would have been nice if some of the pages were in color but that did not detract from the overall view quality of the models. This book did however lack diversity, you see the same guys over and over again. I plan to purchase more books by Sherwin Carlquist.

Beautiful photographs, beautiful intact men!

I love Dr. Carlquist's work. I first came across one of his books at A Different Light bookstore in West Hollywood. I immediately connected to his work and grabbed it up. I've been a fan ever since.
This his his 4th book, published in 2002. It features 212 black and white photos and is a huge 12 x 12. They just don't make beautiful photo books like this any more!

"The striking landscapes of Bryce Canyon, Zion, the Escalante Staircase and other places in southern Utah add intense feeling to the photos in this book, in which desert sandstones from California also play a conspicuous role. A concern for the beauty of natural rock, weathered wood, and diverse leaf surfaces is combined with innovation in viewing the surfaces of the male body. As with all of the other books, only intact males are photographed, thus emphasizing the natural history approach."

Sorrow As Well As Romance

Laura Foster left the desolation of her life and moved to Alder Gulch, where she finally felt a glimmer of hope that she had people that cared for her. She and her toddler son have wormed their way into the hearts and lives of her adoptive townspeople and she even has a protector in the form of Josiah McClintock, who has his own secrets and crosses to bear. Laura has not had it easy. Her young life has so much tragedy it's amazing how this woman can take it and not want to just lie down and cease living.

Josiah McClintock has been watching out for Laura since she came to Alder Gulch.There's just something about her that make him constantly have her in mind. Laura cannot understand they whys of Josiah's interest. She's nobody, broken and alone but for her precious boy. Josiah has never told the occupants of Alder Gulch and it's surroundings the true facts of his life. He wonders if they knew, would they still accept him. He thrives on the day to day. He isn't afraid of hard work and there's just a peaceful quality about him that is attractive. Josiah watches his friends marry and have children and is torn about whether he wants the same for himself. Josiah knows that Laura still has nightmares of her life with Frank, who she is sure is dead. What if he isn't dead? What if Laura's leaving his home and seeking refuge with her sister and her family leads to more anguish? These things are never far from either Laura's, or Josiah's mind for that matter.

When her nightmares become reality how will Laura survive losing all that she holds precious? It takes Josiah's staunch determination and his willingness to open his heart for Laura to realize she is better in this world instead of the next.

BLUE HORIZON by Hildie McQueen in the fourth novella in the Shades of Blue series or Western Romantic stories and it not for the faint of heart. BLUE HORIZON is a tear-jerker with so much feeling. There is tragedy and there is hope and understanding. Josiah and Laura are fabulous additions to the cast of characters in the Shades of Blue series. They stand on their own and are as unforgettable as is BLUE HORIZON. I truly enjoyed this story and highly recommend it to all. Be prepared for some tears or sadness and then some of joy, something Hildie McQueen is so great at writing.

True Western Novella

This novella dealt with some pretty heavy stuff. I didn't expect such a short story to have such an emotional effect on me. I both mourned and cheered for our Laura, who had finally had enough. This story grabs you right from the start and is so complex, I really don't know how the author fit all of it in. Our cowboy Josiah, never gave up and his tenderness and compassion is what makes this story so good.

This story really does have a "Did I just read that?"

This novella is worth way more than .99, but know it is not a light hearted romance. There is some true grit to this one. The story reminds you that the west was wild and untamed with it's own justice system.

No Fluff !

Not your typical western historical romance. If you are looking for pure fluff then this is not for you, but if you want to root for the heroine that she finds true love & overcomes all of life's worst then read on ! Just know that Laura deals with loved ones who are murdered, physical/sexual/mental abuse . Well written, I could not put it down !

About the Author
Ernie Kurtz received his Ph.D. in the History of American Civilization from Harvard University in 1978. His doctoral dissertation was published as the book Not-God: A History of Alcoholics Anonymous. Since then, he has published The Spirituality of Imperfection, and the booklet Shame and Guilt: Characteristics of the Dependency Cycle. He has also published a number of articles, both scholarly and popular, on topics related to his interests and has lectured nationally and internationally on subjects related to the academic study of spirituality. Some of his articles have been published in the 1999 book, The Collected Ernie Kurtz. Dr. Kurtz taught American History and the History of Religion in America at the University of Georgia and Loyola University of Chicago. From 1978 to 1997, he served on the faculty of the Rutgers University Summer School of Alcohol Studies and from 1987 to 1997 as a lecturer at the University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration. After a brief stint as Director of Research and Education at Guest House, then an alcoholism treatment facility for Catholic clergy, Ernie retired to Ann Arbor, Michigan, and began taking classes in the School of Information at the University of Michigan. He continued to travel widely offering presentations until late 1997, when a botched medical procedure led to spinal surgery that only partially restored his ability to stand and walk. Noting that "it is ironic that I now walk like a drunk," Ernie devoted his remaining time to the intricacies and possibilities of electronic research in this field. Ernie passed away January 2015.

" God , I'm Not-God ,You Are-God "

" God , I'm Not-God , You Are-God " became my " mantra " during the second year of my recovery in the program of Alcoholics Anonymous. I still repeat it often. I had never heard the phrase " Not-God " . Yet, many people around me and many of my readings suggested I had to stop playing God , especially if I wanted relief from the continuous stream of thoughts that would enter my mind. Not until I admitted , believed and accepted that I was " Not-God " , was I given the relief I sought.
This book provides a historical foundation for an understanding of Alcoholics Anonymous. In addition, it fills the blanks required for a more thorough understanding of the big book of Alcoholics Anonymous.
It is an absolute must read for those interested in Alcoholics Anonymous . In addition , I suggest alcoholics read the book if they are fortunate to reach a point in their recovery where they develop a curiosity as to the history of AA . Tim H.

Deep and Clear

I have read widely about AA. This is the best history I have read. Not only does the author organize many historical details, but strings them into a cogent storyline, Kurtz explains the underlying theme of developments, using the idea of Powerless-ness brings Power, and how it is a Spiritual concept. I can see how many detractors don't really understand the basic ideas of AA.
There is so much in the book and footnotes; that I plan to re-read much of it.

About the Author

Andrew M. Duncan started programming in FORTRAN on Control Data 6600 hardware in 1974, and a quarter century later progressed to Mac OS X. He holds a Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the California Institute of Technology, and a Masters in mathematics from the University of California at Santa Cruz. He is now on leave from doctoral work on compilers at UC Santa Barbara. He currently works at Expertcity, designing the core class libraries.

Compact and full of information on a weird language.

As an advanced C++ programmer trying to pick up Objective-C (a weird freakin' language if you ask me), I found this little Pocket Reference to be invaluable. For one thing, its really small which I like -- who needs another tome to litter the bookshelves? I find that it is well written, I actually just started reading it from the beginning and found it to be pretty easy to follow. Finally I = [[NSString alloc] initWithString:@"Understand"]; the crazy formatting for Objective-C methods which just looked like jibberish to me at first. Believe me, after 20 years of programming I can usually understand languages that I've never touched before -- I really needed this book to help me get a handle on Objective-C and it did a commendable job.

Negatives: of course, this is not exactly comprehensive. Since I am also learning Cocoa, I would have liked a little more Cocoa material mixed in. I did find that the writing was at times a bit confusing when discusssing some of the more abstruse concepts of Objective-C. And, always, I like lots of real code examples -- perhaps that just isn't feasible in a book this compact.

Overall, this is a very good book for a newcomer to Objective-C. With this in one hand and Google in the other I can get by quite nicely as I write my iPhone Apps.

Good, but not for beginners

I got this book for a friend who really enjoys programming and wanted to get more in depth with applications. He specifically had been asking for books about Objective C. I assumed this book would be a big help, since he already had a good handle on programming in a general sense. I was right to a point. He loves the book and is finding it very helpful and informational. It is most definitely a handy reference book to keep with you as an Objective C programmer. But it does not get into any of the finer details (as it shouldn't, being a pocket reference) and I did not consider that he did not already have a good grasp on that. So this is an excellent book to get for a person who already knows the basics of Objective C programming and just wants the quick reference points while they are working. According to my friend it is nearly perfect for that. I just missed the information he needed on some of the earlier info he wanted. Happy Shopping!

Handy, well written Objective-C Reference!

Andrew Duncan's Objective-C Pocket Reference is just the book that budding Cocoa programmers should have on their desk. It is well written, well indexed, and succinct enough to read in an evening if desired.
After reading it cover to cover, I think this will be a valuable resource for looking up any Objective-C related questions I have.
Note, you should have an understanding of C before trying to read this book. Also - it will probably make more sense to you if you already have some experience with Cocoa. This is a quick reference - probably not the best way to learn the language. However, the book contains a list at the end which recommends other books and websites which are more thorough.
I'd say it's well worth the cost.
