About the Author
Juan Gutierrez is a retired CEO of an international training company. He spent 30 plus years consulting in the area of improving human performace through training and coaching. He has given over 2,000 presentations, written 40 published articles and travelled extensively during his career. In addition, he has managed teams that focused on both merging businesses and improving business processes. He has been active in several associations and served on the Board of Directors of the American Society for Training and Development When he retired he re-kindled his passion for golf, and applied this extensive background in training to his own learning of how to be the best putter possible. Then he was asked, by golfers he coached on how to become “great on the green,” to write a book so others could improve. Make More Putts is a result of that request. He resides in Florida, with his wife, and enjoys golf, reading, aquariums and travel.

This is an outstanding compilation of putting drills, many of which I had never seen before. My own focus was on the group of drills to help you keep the body still. Whatever your area of weakness might be, you will find drills that will help you improve. The book is a bargain that will pay for itself the next time you go out with your foursome.

Nothing new here

I was very excited when I first saw this book in the Kindle store. Sadly, I don't have much good to say about it.

If you are a true Bundy scholar, you will buy this book no matter what I say. I count myself among this group. I've read
The Stranger Beside Me,
The Only Living Witness,
Riverman,
The Phantom Prince,
Ted Bundy: Conversations With A Killer,
Defending the Devil,
and The Bundy Murders: A Comprehensive History.

If you have read all of these or more, this book is about 99 before. There are some good pictures, a couple of letters, and a few tidbits of conversations with Keppel that I don't think have been published. If you are like me, you will easily fork out the eight bucks just for these. Otherwise, this book ought to be called Riverman: Abridged. That's pretty much all it is. Just Riverman with the majority of the stuff about the Green River case taken out. It's a very redundant book, and I'm not sure why Keppel wrote it. And it isn't co-authored by Keppel and Aynesworth; Aynesworth just wrote the foreword.

If you are more than marginally interested in Bundy, but not to the point of reading everything published about him, just check out The Only Living Witness and Riverman. That should be good enough. But if you only want to read one book, I would recommend The Bundy Murders, a Comprehensive history.

In other words, I dont recommend this book to anyone whose purchase of it would depend on a recommendation.

Riverman Revisited

I felt so strongly about the information in this book that I am writing my first review. While I admire Keppel for his accomplishments throughout his illustrious career, there is no new information in this book. Some passages seem to be quoted verbatim from Riverman. Quite frankly, I am sorry that I spent money on rehashed material.

Bob Keppel Always Delivers

I don't want to say that I enjoy his books, because there is nothing about them to enjoy. I think appreciate is the best word. He is always concise, to the point, and very meticulous. I have read the book about Bundy's involvement with the Green River Killer Case, and of course I know Bundy's history pretty much by heart. This book offers that history from the viewpoint of the man who wanted to catch him in Washington State, but never gets his chance.
He also gives a history lesson, in that back then there was no VICAP, no HITS, and interagency cooperation was enough to get a cop fired. Bundy's crimes were partly instrumental in opening up the minds of the older generations in law enforcement, and they learned, some would say the hard way, how valuable these tools have become.
You'll also find the transcripts of his visits to Bundy about the Green River Killer, as well as Bundy's last minute confessions given in hopes of sparing his own life. Didn't work. He finally broke down and cried. That's the way I prefer to remember one of the most mentally ill people who ever walked the face of this earth. Broken and begging for his life, just like his victims.
Good read for first time Bundy readers and those who are already very familiar with the case.

Lessons that would have saved me from some awful names

A few years ago, while working for the speaker company Altec Lansing, I was put in charge of naming our new products. Between the product managers, marketing, and engineering, we'd brainstorm some ideas, and then I would run around getting everyone's input and watch each of my favorites get killed off for a variety of reasons ("this name makes me think of this nasty thing," "nah, not this one," "oh, how about this?" "This one already exists in this other category") We were getting nowhere very, very slowly. In one case, I remember battling out naming a technology with a team of very smart engineers. The result? "Side-firing Dipole Surround Technology." The name was a total clunker. No one knew what it meant. No one could remember it. No one was happy. We hired Alexandra Watkins and her team at Eat My Words to save us. She shared her "Smile and Scratch" test, a clear set of criteria for good and bad names; she set up a clear process for vetting out names where everyone felt included and yet no one was given the power to derail the project; and best of all, we ended up with a series of awesome names that I still love (Expressionist, for a line of boldly designed speakers; Moondance, for a line of bedroom speakers that included a light glow; Backbeat, for a line of slick earphones.) When I ventured out and created my own social media video production company, she named it Endless Echo, because that's what happens when you create a meaningful video and it gets shared around. I just finished reading the book and I'm pleased to say she put it all in there: her criteria, her methodology, and even her consensus-building process. It's a quick and fun read and it makes perfect sense. It's what I learned working with her.

I’ve read a lot of marketing books but this was one of the best, best written, most useful, marketing books I’ve read.

What did I think of this book: in a word, “Awesome!” As a marketing communications guy I’ve read a lot of marketing books but this was one of the best, best written, most useful, marketing books I’ve read. For a marketing person, whether you need to come up with a name or any creative idea, the down to earth concepts and practical common sense approach to generating creative ideas you’ll find here are worth the price of the book ten times over. Since coincidentally I happened to be involved in a rather tricky product naming exercise for one of my brands at the time, (timing is everything) this book, as well as being an excellent read, dropped into my life like manna from heaven just when I needed it most.

Without getting into the details, I had found what I had thought was a great product name. But of course not everybody liked the name, for exactly the reasons Alexandra identifies in her book. So for the last couple of months I’d been wrestling with the problem, and experiencing the situation again described perfectly in her chapter titled “Put Yourself Out of Your Misery”.

Then a few weeks ago, I got the promo email for “Awesome”. As soon as I read the synopsis (at 3:45AM Saturday morning) I downloaded the book, started reading, and couldn’t put it down. Four hours later I finished it in time for Saturday morning breakfast. I reread it over quickly a couple more times during the weekend because I thought it was so good, and more importantly, so practically useful for solving the communication problem I faced.

“Awesome” is written from a background of solid experience in the very specialized field of product naming, has a disarmingly simple yet powerful, no-nonsense framework for evaluating and solving naming issues and problems, and suggests a practical, common sense approach that anyone can use for solving those problems and finding a great product or company name. The takeaway bonus is that in a broader sense, it gives you a very simple down-to-earth technique for generating creative ideas to solve any marketing communications problem.

I loved the book and thought it was exceptional: short, punchy, an easy, informative, and interesting read, and packed with easy-to-implement practical ideas and techniques. It should be on the shelf (or tablet) of anyone involved in a creative business. Which today is just about everybody.

Trademark attorney gives it two thumbs up!

WOW! What a great resource Alexandra has developed here. As a trademark attorney who often has to talk clients off the ledge after telling them that their chosen brand name doesn't make a good trademark (usually because it is too descriptive or too similar to an existing mark for related goods/services), I found this book a great resource for those clients who want to go the DIY naming route. This is also a great book for clients who work with an agency, to enable them to understand and participate more fully in the naming process.

Spent 12 years with IBM, first in the Boeblingen Development Lab in technical and management positions, then as the head of EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa) Software Product Management for IBM's database and application development products in Stuttgart (Germany), San Jose (California, USA) and Toronto (Canada). Spent 6 years as Director with SIZ (Informatics Center of the German Savings Banks Organization). Started his own consulting company InnoTivum, Rheinbreitbach, Germany, in 2001 focussing on all strategy and management topics in relation to software, in particular the alignment of business and IT. Mr. Kittlaus has published numerous articles and the books ‚Data Mining’ (Addison Wesley, 1998), ‘Business Process Reengineering und Produktivit�tssteigerungsprogramm’ (Deutscher Sparkassen Verlag, 1999) und ’Database Marketing’ (Deutscher Sparkassen Verlag, 2001). He was co-author of the book ’Software-Produkt-Management’ (Kittlaus/Rau/Schulz, Springer, 2004). Since 2005 he is member of the board of the German software company Sander & Doll.

Peter N. Clough:

Graduate of Trinity School (NYC) and Columbia University (BA in French Literature). Prior to joining IBM, two years spent on Wall Street as programmer and systems analyst. Employee of IBM since 1970, with experience in marketing and sales, finance, and business terms. Experienced in several industry sectors, especially Finance. Responsibilities have included both hardware and software marketing and sales as well as developing terms and conditions and pricing for all types of software within IBM. Influenced, participated in or managed every major IBM software terms development since 1983. Fourteen years in Europe Middle East Africa Division of IBM, split between working in US and in Paris. More recently, developed the offerings and price models for enterprise software sales in IBM’s Software Group, and led or structured sales, and provided deal negotiation assistance worldwide. Currently Enterprise Software Sales Executive and Manager of SW Offerings in IBM’s Software Group. In this role led, structured, or assisted in WW software sales to large customers, generally in the 50 to 500M category. Oversight of IBM software offerings worldwide and architect and author of the pricing structure for IBM’s major software relationship offering, the Enterprise Software and Services Offering. Winner of multiple IBM awards including the IBM Chairman’s Award in May 2000 for work done on software enterprise offerings and the Golden Circle in 2006 for sales contributions.

Good coverage but lacks real life examples

I like the compact form factor (200+ pages), easy writing style and good command of English (you won't find words like "gotten"). On the flip side only 1 of the 5 chapters is devoted to pricing (theory) and lacks real life pricing models as examples. There are two examples but not enough to give a product manager a feel for different pricing models for software. The remaining 4 chapters flow easily but spend too much time (in my opinion) on things like mainframes, SaaS, Gartner models when that coverage could have been better spent on sample MRDs, PRDs, methods for requirements gathering and activities that a real life product manager would have to do. The pricing chapter could have been vastly improved with some real life pricing models of how software is priced by the likes of IBM, Microsoft, VMware and cover things like pricing by processor, core, platform, usage, capacity etc...If the authors plan a 2nd rev I hope they take this into consideration.

Product Manager and pricing done right

After 20 years as software Product Manager in the US and in Europe I find it wonderful that there is finally a book that brings structure and reason to this often chaotic profession. The book provides a very knowledgeable in-depth analysis of the current state of the software business, detailed descriptions of all the tasks of a software product manager, and those of a pricer, and it has lots of real-world examples from companies like Microsoft, Oracle, SAP, IBM and many others. If you are just starting to work as a software product manager or pricer, you will find a lot of value in the frameworks for both software product management and pricing. The frameworks show the full spectrum of these professions on just one page. If you are an experienced professional, there is a lot of methodological advice, a crisp perspective obviously derived from a wealth of experience in the software industry, plus a very comprehensive bibliography.
The authors manage to look at their subjects not only from the perspective of a software vendor, but also describe how this can be applied to corporate IT organizations in all industries. I am not aware of any other book that covers these subjects to a comparable extent. In fact I do not think that there are many other publications on software pricing since I know that the major software companies consider pricing as highly confidential, and do not allow their pricing managers to publish. If you are interested in software product management and pricing, you have to get this book. You will find it to be a greatly valued reference that you will go back to again and again and again and even if you do not intend to establish yourself as a software product manager or pricer in your company. In this book you will also learn how software vendors think and act - great knowledge before negotating with any of them.
