Sedaris is Garrison Keillor's evil twin: like the Minnesota humorist, Sedaris (Naked) focuses on the icy patches that mar life's sidewalk, though the ice in his work is much more slippery and the falls much more spectacularly funny than in Keillor's. Many of the 27 short essays collected here (which appeared originally in the New Yorker, Esquire and elsewhere) deal with his father, Lou, to whom the book is dedicated. Lou is a micromanager who tries to get his uninterested children to form a jazz combo and, when that fails, insists on boosting David's career as a performance artist by heckling him from the audience. Sedaris suggests that his father's punishment for being overly involved in his kids' artistic lives is David's brother Paul, otherwise known as "The Rooster," a half-literate miscreant whose language is outrageously profane. Sedaris also writes here about the time he spent in France and the difficulty of learning another language. After several extended stays in a little Norman village and in Paris, Sedaris had progressed, he observes, "from speaking like an evil baby to speaking like a hillbilly. 'Is thems the thoughts of cows?' I'd ask the butcher, pointing to the calves' brains displayed in the front window." But in English, Sedaris is nothing if not nimble: in one essay he goes from his cat's cremation to his mother's in a way that somehow manages to remain reverent to both of the departed. Fun easy read...

Me Talk pretty One Day by David Sedaris

This is typical David Sedaris. The book has two parts, the first one is anecdotes of Mr. Sadaris growing up - the eccentricity of his father and all family members. Basically it contains his life growing up in North Carolina, then his move to Chicago, and finally to New York City.

The second part of the book is mostly his life with Hugh, his lover and living in France.

Narrated from the first person point of view, the book has no start, middle or finish - but rather a series of anecdotes. Each one could possibly stand out as a short story.

Mr. Sedaris comedy is better heard than read, but I can picture his voice when I read. There are some moments that I thought stood out. On "Jesus shaves" I liked his commentary that the Easter bunny was as real as the story of Jesus.

On "I pledge allegiance to the flag," Sedaris makes fun of our American stupidity and its rewards from malpractice lawsuits. And there is a commentary of Americans traveling in the Metro in Paris and how they pick on Sedaris confusing him for a pickpocket thief - however, to my disillusion he never revealed to the Americans that he spoke English.

The book is an easy fun read. i read it on my trip from Chicago to Puerto Vallarta (4 hours) and still have time left.

Comedy routine gone too long

I bought this book because awhile back I happen to read one of the chapters from this memoir, the one entitled "Me Talk Pretty One Day." In this chapter, Sedaris describes his struggles at learning French in a "sink or swim" language class. Being fully immersed in this class is made more difficult with the antics of the "language instructor from Hell" who goes after each student methodically. I enjoyed this chapter mainly because I think this is something we all could readily identify with in some way, and he came across as quite funny.

After reading the entirety of Me Talk Pretty One Day though, I tend to agree with the reviewers who say that reading Sedaris is better left in moderation and smaller doses. His humor--snarky, cynical, sardonic, self-deprecating--is funny at times and moments, but over the long haul it loses its steam. Not only that, but reading an entire book by the author helps the reader begin to fully understand that Sedaris' humor is not so much self-deprecating as egocentric. I suppose this is the point, and that it's all part of his shtick, but it works against him and renders his book less entertaining, more annoying.

In specific parts, I found Sedaris funny. I enjoyed the first chapter, "Go Carolina", where he talks about his visits to speech therapy. He finds a way to avoid all words that have the dreaded "s" in them as a way to help his self-esteem and avoid interrogation from his speech therapist. Some of the bits about him being a "mover" were funny as well, albeit over the top. Sections of his reflections about his visit to France are entertaining as well, as well as his attempts to learn the French and not fully being able to fit in.

Over all, though, a good deal of the narrative loses its humor over the course of two hundred odd pages. Some chapters were entertaining, others were entirely pointless. The latter parts of the novel were a struggle to get through, and I found myself wanting to skim entire sections. By the end, it became sort of like a comedy routine gone too long, with repetitive material being thrown at us again and again, waiting for the light chuckles.

This is my only read from this author, but I'm not sure if I will read this author again, unless it is a very short essay.

Laughter is the Best Medicine--Enjoy!

I've read about Sedaris and his sense of humor especially when he has been compared with Augusten Burroughs, author of Running with Scissors, whom I like a lot. Some people think that he is wittier than Burroughs. I won't compare them. I like them both. This book provided more laughs than I thought it would. As a former expat, die hard crossword puzzle addict, and child of a couple of one-of-a-kind parents, I can identify with much of Sedaris' humor. I didn't enjoy all of the chapters equally. But I was identifying and laughing at least more than 50% of the time.

Many of us, including me, had troubles fitting in at school. Sedaris had a lisp. I enjoyed reading about his interactions with his speech teacher. A story from the Metro in Paris is priceless. His birth family, characters all, will entertain you with their eccentricities. Sedaris admits that prior to becoming a writer he was a bit of a drifter, working at all sorts of unusual jobs, and met his share of strange people. I like the way he compares his boyfriend's life as the son of a State Department diplomat stationed in various places overseas to Sedaris' more mundane life in the U.S. I got many laughs from his chapter on esoteric food when he has to conduct a thorough search of his dinner plate in order to find what he has ordered. There is a bathroom story which is hilarious--potty humor at its best.

I found foul language to be at a minimum, used mostly when he is telling us about his weird brother who calls himself "Rooster" and has a few filthy stock phrases he uses continually, particularly shocking because he uses these with their parents. I knew that Sedaris is known to be edgy and bizarre and I already found his Christmas stories to be a little too far out there for me. But these stories were enjoyable, with not that many cringe-worthy stories. Naturally you won't be wanting to read this if you're particularly prudish or squeamish. I'm a 67-year-old woman who doesn't enjoy wallowing in filth, but I do enjoy someone with an edgy sense of humor. Try it, you might like it, and you can always skip the parts that make you cringe or aren't your cup of tea.

Since much of their career together had entailed political advocacy for giant technology programs—that is, speechwriting, ghostwriting, personal coaching, lobbying, strategic marketing, and public relations—they also brought a mastery of all the things that make oral proposals different from written proposals.

After their first fifty oral proposal competitions (almost every one a winner) they codified and service-marked their oral proposal development process, Winning Out Loud, which is the basis for this book. Their experience on the next 200 competitions brought refinements to a process which has added many billions of dollars to the top lines of the Harrises’ clients.

Good Reading

Working in Hollywood as an assistant to one of the hottest movie stars alive wasn’t exactly how Evan Walker pictured his life, but it was his only option if he was to find the man who abandoned him and his mother. While playing gopher for one of the country’s biggest stars, Evan bides his time, waiting on the information he needs to turn his mother’s life around. What he doesn’t plan on is falling hard for Cree Radek.

Evan Walker is a conflicted soul. He wants to find his father so he can go back home and take care of his mother. But, the longer he’s around Cree, the more he wants to stay right where he is. I loved his desire to be there for his mother and to care for her, even if it meant giving up what really made him happy – Cree. What I didn’t quite care for was the way he overreacted to protect himself from getting hurt. I get that, no one wants to look the fool, but he went a little overboard. But, in the end, he swallows his pride and does what he should have in the first place, redeeming him in my opinion.

Cree Radek is an enigma for most people, hiding behind black glam eyeliner and leather so that no one really gets to know him. Trouble is he’s extremely reluctant to let anyone ever get to know him. I was thrilled when he and Evan made that connection and found that they could be at ease with each other. His fear of being used and exploited combined with Evan’s fear of getting hurt really create a huge wall between the two that comes tumbling down in a very epic manner. To Cree’s credit, despite his hang ups, he has a big heart and seems to forgive easily enough. Lucky for Evan.

Acting Out is a sweet and sexy story of two rather lost souls trying to find their romantic footing with one another. Despite everything thrown at them, they tough it out and find a way to make it work, even when neither thinks there’s a chance. A hot little story about honesty, forgiveness, and second chances.

I loved Cree and Evan

I was extremely impressed with this installation of the Hollywood Hotties Series. I loved Cree and Evan.

Evan is looking to find his dead beat dad that left his mother pregnant and alone. Working for Cree is only a means to an end. Until he realizes that the persona that Cree hides behind is just that, a shield to keep the rest of the world out.

Cree has been used many times in his life and being a celebrity only made it worse. However, when Even starts to find links to his father, he starts to see that there is more to the man who is his assistant.

There is instalove situation, however, for once, it worked for me. This story wrenched my heart out and even made me tear up because I was that connected to the characters even though it is a short story. I felt like the characters connected in the heat of the moment, but everything they went through and finding out the real man behind the different facades they used helped them establish so much real quick.

I can't wait for the next part of this story and can't wait to see where Mia takes the next characters!

Cree Radek and Evan Walker are a couple that I wouldn’t normally put together.

I enjoyed their banter, their chemistry was somewhat there, but found that the book felt really rushed.

I really wanted more from the story about Evan and his family. It was just kind of left. I did enjoy his mom and her perspective, but overall, I wanted more from that side of things. However, I did really like how Evan described his life. It was not as if he was really “lost” or some of the clich� things that authors do in stories like this one.

I also really liked how Cree was able to come out of his own shell a little in this book. I enjoyed the way he tried to take care and despite being hurt, he was able to put his feelings aside and really learn how to forgive.

This was a good story; it just left a little more for me to want.

Acting Out

There is more to Evan leaving home for Hollywood than finding employment. It has nothing to do with stardom, finding love, or abandoning his mother. Although being employed in the movie industry will help Evan achieve the goals that he left home for. Working as Cree Radek’s assistant is a job he takes very seriously. He needs the money to help him acquire the answers he is seeking. He doesn’t expect the attraction and he certainly doesn’t anticipate the reciprocation of all the thoughts and feelings that he is experiencing in the presence of his larger than life employer.

The armor that Cree wears is to protect him from others. He doesn’t need people in his life that will use him for his fame or money. He doesn’t need lovers that are just looking to add a notch in their belt. So to keep users away he has created an image that keeps people out. The problem with that is his new assistant and how perceptive he his. Cree also sees something in Evan that he doesn’t see in many people and it’s that quality that makes him want more than just an assistant out of Evan.

Acting Out, the second book in Mia Watts Celebrity series works quite well as a stand-alone. There is a mention of one of the previous books characters and one of the characters (minor role) has another minor role here in this installment of this sexy gay romance series.

A wide variety of homebrew and commercial train-sensors is covered, with instructions on DIY alternatives ranging from very simple to ultimate performance. Based on the use of the excellent scale signals that are on the market, the text applies to any combination of DIY and commercial sensor and control hardware. Multiple-block signaling with turnouts, “tumble-down”, and cross-tracks are discussed in detail. The use of the same sensors for automatic track (train or “cab”) control is described for turnaround loops and wyes, for the prevention of following- and opposing-train collisions, and for non-derailing at improperly positioned turnouts. Also covered is the application of these concepts in a Digital Command Control context. DIY Advanced Model Railroad Signaling Electronics assumes a very modest knowledge of electronics, or alternatively, the ability to interpret a schematic diagram and solder simple, highly economical components on a hobbyist’s circuit board. Specific electronic board layouts have been designed for the most important circuits, and commercial sources for the boards – as well as all other components – are provided. About the Author
J. Richard (Dick) Kerr holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, and is a retired infrared, laser, and avionics systems engineer. He has authored over 60 scientific and engineering papers, and has been granted 10 patents. During his career he has been a professor, Graduate School president, engineering manager, and entrepreneur. Starting with an early childhood interest in model railroading, Dick has been fascinated with the idea of providing truly realistic, automatic signal operation that far exceeds the capabilities of commercially available toy train and scale model commercial units. Having (partially) retired, he has spent much of his time fleshing out these ideas in great detail, including testing on his own model train layouts. Many years have passed since the first motivation for these concepts, and he hopes that their final exposition will bring pleasure to- and stimulate the creativity of – others in this challenging and timeless hobby.

As the caption states - "Complete set of 10, 8.0 Edition" - only it is not 8.0 the latest edition. Instead it is a mixed collection of older versions dating back to 5, 4 and 7 editions compiled to make a complete set.

Five volumes in the set are older than the current 8.0 edition.
