Further Adventures of Miss Virginia Bell and her family

At the beginning of this sequel to Family Shoes, the Bishop has asked Rev. Alex Bell to move to a new parish, a depressed housing project outside London. The residents there seem entirely lacking in community and church spirit, and indifferent to their new vicar. Because the Bishop has urged each of the Bell children to find a way to make the new assignment a success, each uses her or his initiative to make connections between the vicarage and the community. By the end, they've learned an important lesson: people become invested in each other by *doing things together* to improve their community, rather than by having those improvements done for them.
Streatfeild's books are among my favorites to re-read, but they are markedly formulaic: each has three or four kids, one of whom is pretty, and one who is plain or fat. One or two will be talented and driven, one gifted but unmotivated, and one lazy and often resentful of her position within the family. Almost all of the children in her books end up being essentially responsible, family-oriented, enterprising, and good problem-solvers when they learn to work together, using their different skills. What saves these books is Streatfeild's ability to capture the little resentments and solidarities of family life. As well, even the less likeable characters tend to become more sympathetic, because they grow in realistic ways. Ginnie Bell, Jane Winter, and Nicky Heath all mature through their escapades, but they do not really repent or fundamentally change - they certainly continue to infuriate their siblings!
Streatfeild's refusal to thoroughly reform her characters keeps the books from being saccharine-sweet and makes possible some truly touching moments. In New Shoes, this moment comes when we see Ginnie's realization that her smug, horribly spoiled cousin Veronica is desperately lonely. Although Ginnie certainly uses Veronica's desire for attention to get what she, herself, wants, by the end of the book she has ensured that her cousin's parents see their daughter in a different light.

delicious sequel to "Family Shoes"; warmth, humor, delight

"New Shoes" is a delectable sequel to "Family Shoes." The book can stand on its own, but it will make you eager to read the first adventures of the Bell family. Reverend Alexander Bell accepts a call to a church in a new town outside London, where the bishop thinks the new town needs not only Alex but Cathy and the childrem, Paul, Jane, Ginnie, and Angus, to help make the new town proud of itself. The blossoming of the children's talents, Ginnie's adventures with Admiral Oakley, what it takes for Mrs. Gage to stay with the family, the surprise reappearance of Miss Bloggs, Aunt Rose, Uncle Alfred, and Veronica (we all have relatives!), Ginnie's plotting to remain at St. winifred's, and the transforming effect of the Bell family on the new town,create a book you'll read over and over. Don't miss Ginnie's debut in the national press!

Another magical SHOES book

Do you remember when the Meg Ryan character walked into Tom Hanks' FOX BOOKS store and the customer asked about the "Shoes" books, and a monologue about the wonders of Noel Streatfeild's "Shoes" books ensued, touching on Dancing Shoes, Ballet Shoes, and Skating Shoes, which is absolutely wonderful? That scene made me break down crying, because I had never heard anyone other than myself talk about these terrific books, and the fact that it is tragic that they are mostly out of print and hard to find. This book is a wonderful story of working hard for a goal, and accomplishing it, or at least getting on the road to achieving a reasonable, yet magical, goal. This one is less "artistic" and more "home" focused than the other SHOES books. If you want a great book for your favorite elementary school girl, buy this one - then buy the other "Shoes" books (and get a copy of Tennis Shoes for your favorite boy too!)

Superb Overview of Bird Biology and Species Occurring Worldwide

Produced in collaboration with Audubon, "Bird: The Definitive Visual Guide" (2007 by DK Publishing) deserves the highest praise for its superb presentation of birds worldwide. Containing a wide variety of representative species, excellent photographs, and a CD featuring some 60 bird songs from around the globe, this is perhaps the best general survey book available on the Class Aves.

The book consists of three chapters and the bird song CD. Whereas chapters two (nonpasserines) and three (passerines) provide basic and interesting information on the biology and geographic occurrence of selected birds representing specific bird orders and/or families, the first chapter touches on more general topics such as form, function, behavior, conservation, extinction, habitats, and ecology.

The Foreword consists of a brief, one page philosophical reflection on the significance of birds in our lives and is followed by 14 full-page images of such species as the African jacana, the European bee-eater, and the great grey owl. As is the case throughout the book, all of these images are in full color and of very high quality.

The Introduction begins with an examination of bird anatomy and physiology. Those individuals less familiar with these topics will find the explanations to be very clear and accessible. At the same time, the specialist will likely appreciate being reminded of how these topics can be distilled to a rather simplified yet informative presentation. For example, in its brief description of respiration, the text states,

"When a mammal breathes, air flows into its lungs and back out again. Bird lungs work differently: air flows straight through the lungs, via a system of air sacs, before being exhaled. This one-way flow allows air and blood to move in opposite directions, known as countercurrent."

The accompanying diagrams very effectively explain how a bird's lungs function in this manner. The reader will continue to encounter similar, high quality explanations throughout the text.

A representative bird skeleton enables us to understand how this structure keeps a bird's weight to a minimum while simultaneously standing up to the rigors imposed by powerful flight muscles. In addition, the explanation of flight forces, speeds, and patterns (pages 32 and 33) is also informative yet concise.

The introduction goes on to clearly describe general avian characteristics such as feather structure, wing structure, gliding and soaring, legs and feet, bills, mechanisms of feeding, communication, defense, breeding, nests and eggs, parental care, living together, migration, threats, conservation, and extinction. Again, one has to admire the manner in which these topics are effectively explained (excellent text and diagrams/photographs) such that the amateur bird enthusiast, perhaps lacking much in the way of formal biological training, can rapidly be brought "up to speed" on the essentials. But, again, professional biologists should also find the explanations very useful as well.

Chapter 1 continues with an examination of bird habitats (28 pages in all being used to cover this topic). A sound explanation of the 8 different recognized biogeographical realms is a notable feature. The significance of continental drift is also considered with respect to the worldwide distribution of ratites (i.e., birds such as ostriches, emus, and rheas). Curious asides such as this abound and add to our fascination for the Class Aves.

Chapter 2 begins with a general overview of nonpasserine bird species and the criteria used for their classification. We then launch into the various orders and families comprising this very broad Avian group. For example, early in this chapter the two species of kiwis are shown side by side. Their geographic ranges are each indicated with a useful accompanying map (these are used throughout the book for each species presented). Important information, such as size, weight, migratory status, nesting, behavior, and species status (e.g., threatened or endangered), are presented as well. Did you know that kiwis are monogamous and, despite their harmless appearance, are perfectly capable of inflicting serious wounds to rivals? Very interesting, indeed.

The parrots (a personal favorite group of mine) consist of some 350 or so species and there is no practical way by which a book of this sort can begin to cover every species. Thus, as in all such cases throughout the work, the authors/editors opt to present some of the most representative species (such as African greys [curiously spelled "grays," rather than the traditional British "grey" spelling], blue and gold macaws, budgerigars, and monk parakeets) while also emphasizing some more unusual species with which the average person might be unfamiliar. In this latter category, the New Zealand Kakapo, a ground dweller and the heaviest parrot in the world, is given a deservedly generous presentation. It is noted how this unique species is being brought back from the brink of extinction through very special protective measures. This and similar such success stories add to our desire to continue bird conservation.

Chapter two provides informative introductions to cuckoos, owls, kingfishers, woodpeckers, toucans, hawks/eagles/falcons, and other such nonpasserines. Very good species representatives are included for each group (though I must confess I did miss seeing the black-and-white-casqued hornbill in the hornbill portion of this chapter... but the authors/editors had to draw the line somewhere).

Chapter three deals with the passerines. After a general introduction (including topics such as anatomy, plumage, bills, nesting/parenting, songs, courtship, and socialization), the species within the Order are examined. Thus we meet the thrushes, wrens, warblers, orioles, flycathchers, ovenbirds, etc., all divided amongst two suborders, the Suboscines and Oscines. While the treatment of passerines is, again, excellent and on-par with the rest of the book, I found the sunbirds section to be especially intriguing. Occurring in parts of Asia and Africa, this group appears to fill the niche that in the New World is occupied by the hummingbirds.

This is not the sort of book one would want to take into the field. It is much too large and heavy for that and it generally does not contain enough species representatives of particular Orders and/or Families to be consistently useful in the manner of a species identification manual. It is rather an excellent general reference manual.

In addition, it should be said that the pages can look a bit crammed with information, both photographic and written. I see this as an asset as it seems there are always at least a few new and interesting avian topics to discover whenever one opens this book.

For those seeking a broad overview of bird biology and an excellent presentation of many of the most representative species (with excellent photographs/illustrations and textual information throughout), look no further. This volume easily earns a five star rating.

Love ALL of My DK Books!

The books that DK (Dorling Kindersley) publishes are always marvelous feasts for the eye. They're the sort of volumes that my little town's library never allowed anyone to check out when I was growing up. Large, heavy, high-quality books filled with pictures could only be read by the patrons while in the library! So as a middle-aged adult I find it a special treat to actually be able to own such books. And they would make great "coffee table" volumes, if you don't have a cat who damages them like my cat does when they're left lying out! Otherwise I recommend leaving them out to be handy for browsing through the beautiful pictures and reading bits here and there whenever you have a little time, and the books will fascinate children, as well. As for this particular title, 'BIRD: The Definitive Visual Guide' is not a birding guidebook, nor is it a comprehensive, in-depth study of one species or of one country's birds. Rather, it's a broad overview of birds in general, with many, many examples and fine photos, plus more information. Each and every page is jam-packed and in color. How could anyone fail to love this book if he or she has any appreciation at all for birds? Oh, and it bears the name Audubon, too, so that's another indicator of an excellent book about birds.

Fantastic Illustrated Guide to Birds

I got this book for my 4 year old daughter who is going through a big "bird phase" in her life. All types of birds seem to fascinate her, and seeing an educational opportunity, we got this book for her for Christmas. This was a great book to get her. The photographs are stunning, the information is sound, and with a poster and a clip art CD included, there's a lot of reasons for her to go through this book over and over again.

Because this book is geared towards older children, the information given is very detailed - something both my kids love. They are learning so many random facts about birds, and really enjoy the intricacies about birds that you simply couldn't get from just watching a tv program about them or through observation alone. The kids were particularly interested in the bone and muscle structure of birds - they really are amazing creatures.

For any bird lover in your life, this book would be a great gift. Highly recommended!

This book is very informative and is concise and straight to the point and is easy to read. An excellent supplement

This book is an excellent supplement to a history or political science textbook; it has 13 short chapters, each with a somewhat detailed look at one specific example of our political system in action. It is quite readable, in addition to being quite informative, and gives a reasonably unbiased look at many aspects of politics in our country. It wouldn't be very useful as a primer or as a primary textbook, but as a supplement, it is excellent.

About the Author

David Chelimsky is the lead developer/maintainer of RSpec, and has contributed to several other open source projects including Cucumber, Aruba, and Rails. He has been developing software for over a decade, including three years training and mentoring agile teams at Object Mentor. He is currently a Senior Software Engineer at DRW Trading Group in Chicago, IL. In his spare time, David likes to play guitar, travel, and speak something resembling Portuguese.

Dave Astels is the Director of Technology at ChannelFireball.com and has been involved with software and computing for over 25 years, recently having spent several years working exclusively with Ruby and Rails. Dave wrote the article that prompted Steven Baker to start the RSpec project.

Bryan Helmkamp maintains Webrat, a Ruby library to implement acceptance tests for web applications in an expressive and maintainable way, and is an active participant in the New York City Ruby community. Bryan is the CTO of Efficiency 2.0, a startup that helps people understand and reduce their energy use.

Dan North writes software and coaches teams and organizations in agile and lean methods. He believes that most problems that teams face are about communication and understanding, which is why he puts so much emphasis on "getting the words right." In 2003-4 this led him to develop the ideas that would become Behaviour-Driven Development. He is delighted by the community that has grown up around RSpec and Cucumber, and especially the enthusiasm and dedication of their core contributors. Dan is currently a Senior Software Engineer at DRW Trading Group in London, where he gets to actually code again!

Zach Dennis is a co-founder and fellow human at Mutually Human Software, an expert custom software strategy and design consultancy in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Good but outdated

I bought this book to obtain a more in-depth treatment of rspec that some of the other books I have read didn't have. Rspec is the framework used for testing where I work and I needed to get up to speed on it. Part I of the book starts with an introduction of rspec and cucumber and then proceeds to illustrate BDD with these two tools for a simple game known as a code breaker. I thought this part presented very well. Real world applications tend to be much more complex than the simple one presented here, but hopefully the principles will apply (with some modifications as appropriate). Part 2 describes BDD in a little more detail while Part III and Part IV cover rspec and cucumber respectively. The part about Rspec is quite good - there is a fair amount of detail with ideas on when to use what along with examples. Part IV is also okay but it seemed to not have enough depth - this isn't necessarily an issue as there is another book on Cucumber I intend to read soon. Part 5 is about applying BDD to Rails. I usually test out the code samples in every book I buy by typing them out from the book and not downloading the source (unless absolutely required). Once concern I had when I purchased this book is that the versions of the gems used in the book are outdated and therefore the code may not work on newer version of gems. As a matter of fact, the book recommends using the versions of the gems that the original was source was tested with. I had instead used the latest version of all gems. In Parts I through IV, not many changes are required to get the source to work properly with the newer versions of the gems. Occasionally there may be warning (for instance, in Rspec, Stub is deprecated, use double instead) and this was easy to fix and once fixed, the warning went away. The only part that I didn't try the samples was Part V - BDD with Rails - the reason being the book uses Webrat but Capybara seems to be the popular choice now in the community. The book does cover Selenium and includes ideas for testing different components of Rails, so the ideas are usable, but the source code isn't out of the box. In other words, this section of the book is outdated. Not withstanding the caveats, this book is still worth a read.

Good intro to RSpec... and more!

I find the RSpec book hard to review as on one hand, it's excellent, but on the other hand, I felt it could be still much better. Also, with the introduction of the more recent Cucumber book, makes it hard to appreciate the extra stuff in this book as it is quite a bit overlapping with that of the Cucumber book. I still enjoyed the book.

The book is divided in five parts. It feels a bit like the parts are written by different authors independently, which isn't unlikely considering the amount of authors. That's too bad as some cross-referring would have made the book better.

The first part is tutorial style where it simulates implementing a project Behavior-Driven-Development-style (BDD). The project is the traditional problem of code-breaker where you need to guess a code and get some hints on how well you did. It drives the project by first writing cucumber specs, then test-driving the implementation using RSpec. The tutorial is simple (perhaps even simplistic) and goes on for about 100 pages.

The second part of the book is the philosophy behind BDD. It is short, consisting of only 2 chapters. The first describes how traditional projects work... or actually how they do not work. Then it quickly runs over some ideas behind agile development and how that is different. The next chapter makes a case for by showing how BDD actually focuses on the communication between developers and customers.

The third part is the RSpec part of the book (where it got its name :P). It's about a 100 pages and does a pretty good job in describing RSpec. The only thing that I was missing was that it could explain a bit more about the RSpec internals... at least I would have found that interesting.

The fourth chapter is the "and more!" part of the book where is introduces cucumber (in the RSpec book :P). The Cucumber introduction isn't fantastic and is pretty short (and has quite some overlap with the tutorial). I wouldn't recommend this book for the cucumber introduction anyways but instead it would probably be better to read... the cucumber book (published about 2 years later).

The last chapter is the rails chapter where it takes rspec and cucumber and explain how to use the extensions for writing features and specs for rails apps. Here, some of the text is already a bit obsolete as the technology moves fast. Still, the concepts are about the same. It contains 3 chapters on cucumber and 3 on rspec.

All in all, I found it a pretty good read and enjoyed most of it. It could be a bit thinner and faster for me as it felt a bit repetitive at times. Partly this was because because some chapters could be integrated better together. For the RSpec part, I'd rate the book 3 stars as it does a good job in describing rspec. But the book is much more than The RSpec Book... therefore I'll give it 4 stars (yet, for Cucumber, it is better to pick up the Cucumber book)

If you are a hard core developer

I am a long time Web Developer, ramping back up on RoR. I was looking for a book that would help me develop a good solid testing environment on this new Rails 3 project that I am creating.

As I read and tried many of the little tiny examples in the book, and eventually decided that I do not want to do Cucumber (I do not need to spend the extra time to generate code to translate requirements from English, RSpec is clear enough for me). Unfortunately (from my perspective), much of the book rambles on about Cucumber and integrating it with RSpec.

As I went through the book and I found a section of code that interested me, it too frequently told me that I would hear more details later on, which I found quite frustrating. I was ready for the down-low, and never seemed to find it, until I eventually jumped to Chapters 23, 24 and 25. Chapters 23, 24 and 25 are the chapters that walk you through the process of developing Test/Behavior driven View, Controllers and Models. This is what I needed to get my project going.

This book is worth it, even if you only look at the RSpec chapters.

Oh, by the way, when you are looking into the tools you want to use for integration testing, I recommend looking into Capybara, which is not talked about in the book.
