Science and history writer Richard P. Emanuel has contributed to a number of ALASKA GEOGRAPHIC® issues. He lives with his family in Anchorage, where they watch birds from their Hillside home.

Scientist and economist George Matz is the author of several articles on ecology and on the economic value of the environment. In addition, he wrote World Heritage Wilderness, Vol. 26, No. 2, of ALASKA GEOGRAPHIC. For the past several years he has been president of the Anchorage chapter of the National Audubon Society.

Rodney Griffiths is a freelance nature photographer who lives in Oxford, England and travels the globe in search of compelling images of birds and other animals. In addition to being published in previous issues of ALASKA GEOGRAPHIC, his work has also appeared in "Birdwatch", "Birdwatching", "Freelance Photographer", and others. The Discovery Channel’s program "Wild About Animals" has featured Griffith’s bald eagle photos.

Elizabeth Manning writes for the Anchorage Daily News, covering wildlife and conservation. In summer of 2000, she traveled to Middleton Island.

Birds inhabit a special place in the human heart and imagination. Whether we are young or old, and whatever our culture, birds enchant us with flashes of color, snatches of song, and their miraculous powers of flight.

Humans have never known a sky empty of birds. Our feathered friends evolved during the Jurassic Period, at the height of the age of dinosaurs, and predated us by 150 million years.

Today, we share our planet with nearly 10,000 species of birds, from enormous, flightless ostriches, nine feet tall and weighing 350 pounds, to delicate hummingbirds, small enough to alight on the palm of a child’s hand. Birds are warm-blooded, lively, often colorful, and striking to behold. Many sound elaborate calls and intricate songs, which resonate in the human heart.

Birds tantalize us, too, with their sudden appearance and disappearance. As I write, a black-capped chickadee swoops into view and alights on a branch outside my window. It shoots glances about with sharp eyes, then seemingly satisfied, chirrups a few bars of a call. An instant later, the chickadee darts off in a burst of flight I can only follow with my eyes. Where did it come from? Where is it going? What does it feel, how does it experience the world that we share?

In such encounters, for moments all too brief amid our busy days, the most common bird has the power to pull us outside of ourselves. Birds bring us scraps of nature, snippets too fleeting but nonetheless vital and nourishing to our souls. A world without birds would be a profoundly impoverished place.

Ornithology, the study of birds, is unusual among modern scientific disciplines in that amateur bird-watchers can still make meaningful contributions to the field. With billions of birds spread across the planet, scientists sometimes rely on observations by amateurs to uncover and document important facts and patterns in the field.

One scientific program that solicits amateur help is Project FeederWatch, a joint effort of the National Audubon Society, the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology, and a pair of Canadian groups.

Audubon officials and scientists at the Cornell Laboratory refer to their amateur collaborators as Citizen Scientists. In fact, some collaborators are trained scientists who participate on their own time, out of personal interest. But whether amateur or professional, Citizen Scientists often find their studies rewarding.

An even larger citizens’ effort is the annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count, or CBC. Each year around Christmas, birders fan out across North America to observe and record every individual bird and bird species found within a designated area during a 24-hour period.

The first Christmas Bird Count took place on Christmas Day, 1900, and counts have been held every year since then. The CBC has grown to be the largest and longest-running wildlife survey in history. More than 45,000 volunteers now participate each year, in some 1,700 counts in 50 states and every Canadian province. Recently, counts have been added in the Caribbean and at Central and South American sites where North American breeding birds winter.

The 1900 Christmas Bird Count was organized by ornithologist Frank Chapman in response to a holiday custom of the period called the "side hunt." Teams of hunters set out to shoot as many birds and small animals as they could in a single day, with the "victory" going to the side that bagged the most. To protest the side hunt, Chapman organized 27 friends in 25 locations to venture afield and count birds, rather than to shoot them. The practice has been refined over the years and has been relatively standardized since the 1940s. Each count now canvasses a well-defined circle 15 miles in diameter. Most counts are conducted by collegial groups.

The first Audubon Christmas Bird Count in Alaska took place in Anchorage, in 1941. The second took place in 1959, also in Anchorage, and Alaska counts have been held every year since . . .

Birding on the Edges

For anyone interested in the wide range of North American birds, Alaska is one of the continent’s most exciting places. That includes Thede Tobish, a past president of the Anchorage Audubon chapter and one of the state’s top birders.

"For hardcore birders who are interested in their North American list, there are obligatory places you go," Tobish explains. "Southeast Arizona, south Texas, south Florida, and Alaska—those are the big ones."

It is no coincidence that the spots on Tobish’s must-see list are all on the margins of the United States. Floridians might well see birds common around the Caribbean and in Central and South America, while Mexican birds often drift north into Texas and Arizona. Alaska, in northwestern North America, is home to boreal or far-northern species seldom seen elsewhere in the United States, along with birds ordinarily found in Asia.

Tobish began watching birds with his father, in eastern Pennsylvania. "He was mainly interested in spring warblers and he just passed it on," he says.

In 1973, Tobish moved to Alaska to attend college. Soon, his interest in birds grew to the verge of obsession. "In the 1970s, Alaska was very much a pioneering place for studies of bird status and distribution," Tobish recalls. "It still is. The size, the remoteness and difficulty of access, historic knowledge [of birds] was very limited. So it got very exciting, very quickly. Even today, anywhere you go in Alaska, you have a chance to uncover something new and distinct."

Whether birds evolved during the Jurassic Period, as paleontologists believe, or whether God created creatures of the air on the fifth day, as Genesis would have it, birds soared, sang, migrated, nested, and inhabited the surface of the Earth, nearly from pole to pole, long before human eyes or ears beheld their beauty and grace. . .

What has survived from the literary record of antiquity is almost entirely the product of an elite of birth, wealth, and education, limiting our access to a fuller range of voices from the ancient past. This book, however, explores the anonymous Life of Aesop and offers a different set of perspectives. Leslie Kurke argues that the traditions surrounding this strange text, when read with and against the works of Greek high culture, allow us to reconstruct an ongoing conversation of "great" and "little" traditions spanning centuries.

Evidence going back to the fifth century BCE suggests that Aesop participated in the practices of nonphilosophical wisdom (sophia) while challenging it from below, and Kurke traces Aesop's double relation to this wisdom tradition. She also looks at the hidden influence of Aesop in early Greek mimetic or narrative prose writings, focusing particularly on the Socratic dialogues of Plato and the Histories of Herodotus. Challenging conventional accounts of the invention of Greek prose and recognizing the problematic sociopolitics of humble prose fable, Kurke provides a new approach to the beginnings of prose narrative and what would ultimately become the novel.

Delving into Aesop, his adventures, and his crafting of fables, Aesopic Conversations shows how this low, noncanonical figure was--unexpectedly--central to the construction of ancient Greek literature.

A magnificent work of scholarship

This is a magnificent work of historical and literary exploration into the largely unexplored traditions adhering to Aesop and their influence on the earliest forays into prose by the ancient Greeks.

Was Aesop a real person, or only a figure of legend? On this question, Kurke is "agnostic." Her primary interest is in the so-called Life of Aesop, an anonymously authored biography of the slave who became a sage; this peculiar book dates from around the 1st or 2nd century CE, but may convey traditional stories about Aesop that go much further back, predating Plato. You should probably read the Life of Aesop before diving into Kurke's theories, or read it along with this book.

This is by far the most extensive analysis of the Life of Aesop yet published, so for this reader (an amateur Aesopist) it's pure catnip. Certain aspects of the Life have long puzzled me; what is the exact nature of Aesop's relationship with his master, and why does his visit to Delphi turn out so badly? Kurke's examination of these issues is the most extensive I've read and her explanations are both convincing and exciting. She's not afraid to advance some bold, original ideas, or to make a few fanciful conjectures, but her risk-taking pays off. Kurke's suggestion that Aesop "was a popular contender for inclusion" in the list of the Seven Sages (p. 135) is a provocative idea I have not encountered anywhere else, and her linkage of the "stolen" vessel planted on Aesop by the Delphians with the phiale of the Seven Sages (p. 237) is downright brilliant.

The second part of the book looks at the writings of Plato, then Herodotus; in the works of both authors, Kurke sees the invisible influence of Aesop. Why invisible? Kurke asserts that these authors not only used Aesopic methods of storytelling, but also deliberately concealed that usage--and she tells you why they did so. This is a bit like using infrared reflectography on a medieval manuscript to read the palimpsest beneath; here, Kurke's "technology" is her wide-ranging knowledge of the literature and of the fiendish complexities of the original Greek. In this rarefied arena, an amateur like myself simply has to follow along, and look forward to assessments by Kurke's peers.

Kurke's arguments are meticulously constructed. Her prose is dense and her vocabulary sometimes highly esoteric, but there is an elegance to her writing that makes reading this book a pleasure. I looked forward to immersing myself in Aesopic Conversations each time I picked it up, and I am sad to have finished it (though I know I will be coming back to reread various passages over and over again for years to come).

I read this book with a special interest in Plato, so I wanted to know more about Greek prose traditions in popular forms, as well as about wisdom traditions. Kurke is a wonderful scholar --her book on praise poetry is terrific, The Traffic in Praise --and this book will be a classic for classicists.

The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down is a tragedy of Shakespearean dimensions, written with the deepest of human feeling. YA?A compelling anthropological study. The Hmong people in America are mainly refugee families who supported the CIA militaristic efforts in Laos. They are a clannish group with a firmly established culture that combines issues of health care with a deep spirituality that may be deemed primitive by Western standards. In Merced, CA, which has a large Hmong community, Lia Lee was born, the 13th child in a family coping with their plunge into a modern and mechanized way of life. The child suffered an initial seizure at the age of three months. Her family attributed it to the slamming of the front door by an older sister. They felt the fright had caused the baby's soul to flee her body and become lost to a malignant spirit. The report of the family's attempts to cure Lia through shamanistic intervention and the home sacrifices of pigs and chickens is balanced by the intervention of the medical community that insisted upon the removal of the child from deeply loving parents with disastrous results. This compassionate and understanding account fairly represents the positions of all the parties involved. Unable to enter the Laotian forest to find herbs for Lia that will "fix her spirit," her family becomes resigned to the Merced County emergency system, which has little understanding of Hmong animist traditions. Fadiman reveals the rigidity and weaknesses of these two ethnographically separated cultures. In a shrinking world, this painstakingly researched account of cultural dislocation has a haunting lesson for every healthcare provider. I thoroughly enjoyed The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down. I can understand why over the course of the past decade, it has become required reading for many students entering health care professions. It painted such a detailed picture of not only a specific incidence of cultural collisions with the Lee family and doctors of Merced, CA, but also how these collisions occur in other cultures and in other instances across America and the world. I felt that it was extremely thorough and fair to both the Hmong experience and the Lee family, and also that of the doctors at MCMC. I could feel and relate to the horrors and frustrations on both sides, and fully understood how and why it was so difficult to reach common ground. I had a deep sense of empathy for Lia, who was the innocent victim of an almost unavoidable cultural gap.

The culture expressed by the Hmong people is vastly different from that of Western culture, and even most Eastern culture and neighboring Asian countries. For example, there is a passage in the book that explains common gestures and social interactions that are considered inappropriate to the Hmong: “Doctors could also appear disrespectful if they tried to maintain friendly eye contact (which was considered invasive), touched the head of an adult without permission (grossly insulting), or beckoned with a crooked finger (appropriate only for animals). It was important to never to compliment a baby’s beauty out loud, lest a dab (an evil spirit) overhear and be unable to resist snatching its soul

The Hmong community in Merced, California are in desperate need of translators. Not only language translators, but more importantly, cultural translators. They need cultural liaisons to not only guide them through western culture, but to educate westerners about their culture. One thing I thought was very poignant, was a quote by a psychologist at Merced Community Outreach Services, by the name of Sukey Walker. She found a way to interact and communicate with the Hmong that was better than any of her American counterparts. She detailed one of her keys to success : “I have one rule. Before I do anything, I ask ‘Is it Okay?’”

This is a very real book. It is very heartbreaking, and very true to life. There was no happy ending or easy solution to the problems in this book. However, there is a certain amount of optimism expressed here, and it made me very hopeful and eager to see these cultural barriers deconstructed.

Cultural / Medical Clashes & A Charming Toddler

Anne Fadiman tells the story of little Lia Lee, a Hmong-American child with epilepsy, and weaves together the woof of parental love and biomedical treatment with the warp of Hmong and American cultures. This book brings into focus how extensively cross-cultural transitions impact both the approaching and approached peoples. In an interview in 2001, Fadiman explains what drew her so deeply into this book, "Yes, it is about an epileptic Hmong toddler, but it is also about many other things. . . I started pulling on a slender thread, the thread that was Lia Lee, the small sick child . . . I pulled on the thread and the thread became a string and the string became a rope, and then I tugged really hard on the rope and I discovered that it was attached to the entire universe."

Fadiman alternates chapters about Lia with chapters on the history and culture of the Hmong people. Interwoven in Lia's story is the story of her people. The parallel can be drawn that the spirit catches the Hmong people with wars and threats of assimilation, and in response the Hmong eschew resistance and migrate. Most of Merced's Hmong population came to the U.S.

Lia's parents wanted "a little medicine and a little txib" (p. 110.) While medical care at MCMC was provided at no charge, Lia's family spent large sums on buying amulets, having a tvix neeb perform ceremonies, and sacrificing chickens, pigs, and even a cow. Foua would grow herbs and make special concoctions both for feeding to Lia as well as bathing her. The author was privileged to be present when the family sacrificed a pig in their living room in order to seek her wandering soul and bring it back to Lia.

From the doctors' perspective Neil Ernst said, "I felt it was important for these Hmongs to understand that there were certain elements of medicine that we understood better than they did and that there were certain rules they had to follow with their kids' lives" (p. 59.)

The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down was both thought-provoking and emotionally rewarding. It is recommend for those who enjoy a well-told story, as well as those working in public health fields, interested in cross-cultural transitions, or who have special interest in the Hmong people.

Anne Fadiman discussed Lia Lee with medical anthropologist Arthur Kleinman. His observations brings out the crucial point (p. 260), "You need to understand that as powerful an influence as the culture of the Hmong patient and her family is on this case, the culture of biomedicine is equally powerful. If you can't see that your own culture has its own set of interests, emotions, and biases, how can you expect to deal successfully with someone else's culture?"

Where is Lia Lee now? In a Newsweek article in 2005, then 22 year old Lia was still in a persistent vegetative state, still cared for at home by her careful and loving mother.

Amazing story everyone should read!

I bought this book for my Medical Anthropology course. In the end, it ended up being one of the best books I have ever read. It truly does tell an amazing story how our medical system and the cultural differences between peoples can cause more harm. Yet, it is very good at displaying the medical system not as evil but as products of society and culture. I cried through this book, also learned about a war I never even knew about. I would recommend this to everyone. Especially if you have an interest in the medical field or culture.

Barry Berman (Ph.D. in Business with majors in Marketing and Behavioral Science) is the Walter H. “Bud” Miller Distinguished Professor of Business and Professor of Marketing and International Business at Hofstra University. He is also the director of Hofstra’s Executive MBA program. Joel R. Evans (Ph.D. in Business with majors in Marketing and Public Policy) is the RMI Distinguished Professor of Business and Professor of Marketing and International Business at Hofstra University. He is also the coordinator for Hofstra’s Master of Science programs in Marketing and Marketing Research.

While at Hofstra, each has been honored as a faculty inductee in Beta Gamma Sigma honor society, received multiple Dean’s Awards for service, and been selected as the Teacher of the Year by the Hofstra M.B.A. Association. If you know nothing of retail it is great. The problem is that it will be outdated quickly. It uses specific stores as examples and these market is too unstable right now for that.
