Interesting but flawed conclusions

Interesting and provocative ideas, and it was useful to discover the religiosity of scientists who in the end overturned the pseudo-physics of the Church. However, Wertheim's conclusion is that there was no war between science and religion until Darwinism. Her evidence is that Copernicus, Newton and others were, in fact, religious; and further that they felt their discoveries revealed an order that for them gave evidence of God. True enough. However, Wertheim's conclusion is unwarranted. That the scientists were not at war with the church does not prove the churches were not at war with the scientists. Calvin, Luther and the Pope all agreed on one thing: Copernicanism was heresy. The Protestants quoted scripture to prove their point, such as the passage where God made the sun stand still to give Joshua more daytime to finish his battle. (The point being that if God made the sun stand still, it must have been moving, rather than the Earth rotating.) The churches did not argue against Newton because by his time, the movement of the Earth and planets about the sun was already accepted.
The author does not offer a reason why math and exclusion of women go hand-in-hand.

Can't Wait to Read Wertheim!

This arrived in less than one week from the time I ordered it and came in perfect condition.
I met Margaret Wertheim at a university lecture and was quite inspired by her words. I am a female physicist, so I'm especially looking forward to what she has to say about women in this field and how both have been influenced religion. I intended to add this book to my reading "cue," but after diving into the forward and introduction, I may need to put down the novel with which I'm currently engaged and continue reading Wertheim to the end!

Pythagoras' Trousers

This book should be compulsory reading for all science teachers, yet the science is simple enough that the book can be appreciated by the non-science focused. The complex vocabulary keeps the reader on their toes, but is well worth the effort for the fanastically simple portrayal of the history of science and mathematics, and the implications of this history on persceptions and directions of science today.
