Great Series

This is a great series of Mandarin readers!

I have been studying Chinese for 4 years now, both in and outside of China. Following very slow progress, I began reading the academic research on second language acquisition and came away with an understanding of “extensive reading” for grammar and vocab acquisition and consolidation- the best method for intermediate learners. (Extensive reading consists of reading works in another language where you comprehend roughly 98% of the content without having to stop and consult the dictionary or grammar reference). The only problem- there are very few good sources in Chinese that facilitate an extensive reading program.

There is the China Breeze series, which is good, but I prefer the Mandarin Companion series for several reasons.

The most important is their presentation of new vocabulary. When there is a word you likely have not come across in the course of your introductory studies, they provide a reference in the back to define these words- most books do this. But with the Mandarin Companion eBook format, you can quickly tap the word to get its meaning without having to flip a few pages. Importantly, the authors have taken care to continue to present the same words several times to further concrete them in your brain (all with links back to the word’s definition).

Of less importance, but still nice- the books include illustrations and fairly compelling stories, things that will keep you interested and reading each day.

I am glad we are getting more and better resources for extensive reading in Chinese! And I would recommend this series to anyone interested in this approach to language acquisition.

Great story

I really liked the fact that this book kept me excited the entire time to keep reading. Whenever I read in Chinese I get bored after several minutes because it's sometimes annoying to look up characters while reading, but this book is super exciting and with basic characters so I am learning characters while enjoying the book. Overall I would highly recommend this book to someone who is learning Chinese characters and wants to learn them In a fun and efficient way.

This is the second Mandarin Companion book I've read. The first was their adaptation of "The Secret Garden". I'm finding it easier to read through Chinese books this level, because I'm also reading works from two other publishers. My only criticism of Mandarin Companion is the lack of audio to help me with the cadence and to check pronunciation, but I find the book interesting, engaging, and the colorful format makes it eye catching.
I don't limit myself to Mandarin Companion because they encourage people to read, so read I will!

Also, being familiar with the basic story line from the original is helpful. I appreciate that they chose names that were not slavish transliterations, but something that was easy to read.

John Pasden has the academic and instructive chops to help the Chinese learner improve on an existing foundation. Kudos to him and his team!

Look forward to my next purchase. I hope they expand their collection of works well beyond what currently exists!

Key book for ad avanced professional level understanding re vaccines. Caution... is 1500 pages and not immediately useful for most physicians, nurses or students. For most purposes, an excellent free book re vaccines with all the needed essentials is simply the CDC "Pink Book" on the Epidemiology of Vaccine Preventable Diseases (http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/pubs/pinkbook/index.html). which runs to about 300 pages + about 100 pages of appendixes so sufficient for most purposes. But for a researcher or a consultant or someone who has to give talks to professional groups about vaccines then this book edited by Plotkin, Orenstein and Offit book does indeed remain an essential reference.

About the Author
ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Stephen E. Lucas is Professor of Communication Arts and Evjue-Bascom Professor in the Humanities at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he has taught since 1972. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and his master's and doctorate degrees from Penn State University.

Professor Lucas has been recognized for his work as both a scholar and a teacher. His first book, Portents of Rebellion: Rhetoric and Revolution in Philadelphia, 1765-1776, received the Golden Anniversary Award of the National Communication Association in 1977 and was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. His major articles include "The Schism in Rhetorical Scholarship" (1981), "The Renaissance of American Public Address: Text and Context in Rhetorical Criticism" (1988), "The Stylistic Artistry of the Declaration of Independence” (1990), and “The Rhetorical Ancestry of the Declaration of Independence” (1998), for which he received the Golden Anniversary Monograph Award of the National Communication Association. His most recent book is Words of a Century: The Top 100 American Speeches, 1900-1999 (2009).

Professor Lucas has received a number of teaching awards, including the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching at the University of Wisconsin and the National Communication Association’s Donald Ecroyd Award for Outstanding Teaching in Higher Education. His lecture course on "The Rhetoric of Campaigns and Revolutions" is among the most popular on campus and has twice been selected for statewide broadcast in its entirety by Wisconsin Public Radio. Professor Lucas is featured in the Educational Video Group’s program on the history of American public address, and he has appeared on the History Channel’s documentary on the Declaration of Independence.

Professor Lucas has directed the introductory public speaking course at the University of Wisconsin-Madison since 1973. Over the years he has been responsible for numerous teaching innovations and has supervised the training of hundreds of graduate assistants. In addition to participating in public speaking workshops and colloquia at schools throughout the United States, he has served as a judge for the major national English-language public speaking competitions in China, has lectured at numerous Chinese universities, and has conducted workshops for Chinese instructors on teaching public speaking.

Stephen Lucas and his wife, Patty, live in Madison, Wisconsin, and have two sons, Jeff and Ryan. His interests include travel, sports, art, and photography.

Worst Textbook Ever!

If I could give it 0 starts I would. This textbook is the worst thing I have ever read. It uses vague language to explain difficult topics. Sometimes you find yourself reading the same sentence over and over and it still doesn't make sense. Seriously, please consider your audience when writing a textbook.

Camp X was the first secret agent training camp ever to be built in North America. This book has rightly attained the status of a classic work in intelligence history. The special operations training at Canada's Camp X superseded in importance the too-often vacuous and over-trumpeted intelligence plotting taking place in New York and Washington, D.C. The secrecy attending that training for decades obscured its significance, and Dr Stafford is to be commended for restoring the balance.

We're off to Spain at the end of the month to celebrate Granny's 70th birthday. Monkey has already started packing for the journey (I joke not!) and Busy Airport has got him talking about our trip. He's been on a plane a few times now and loves the whole airport experience. . . As well as the bold text of the book, on each page there is a question to be answered. Great for plane rides!

My boys LOVE these books! It's perfect to introduce to children around 15 months. I bought them for a recent trip and gave it to them to "read" on the plane. I didn't give it to them before the trip because I wanted to make it something "new" for them. They spent 30 minutes just sliding, pulling, pushing, etc all the neat little elements in this book. I like that there are no flaps. Older kids might like them but for my 15 month olds, they just like tearing flaps. You do have to supervise them while reading the book to make sure they don't pull the tabs out too hard. Overall, it's very sturdy!

Great product with unique interactive pages for kids. My boys (ages 3 and 1) love pulling, pushing and turning on each page. Sturdy construction with extra thick pages.

We have the Busy Zoo and our 17 month old loves it, so we tried the airport. It wasn't as nice as the zoo, the parts of the page that move were just boring.
